Modern day Assassin's Creed won't happen, says Ubisoft

Ubisoft's Montreal-based Assassin's Creed team took to Reddit this week to field questions from fans regarding Black Flag, and the future of the series.

Among the queries was one asking if there would ever be an Assassin's Creed game that takes place completely in the modern day. Not likely, according to lead writer Darby McDevitt.

"I doubt we would do a modern day AC," said McDevitt, which sounds pretty conclusive. "There are just too many mechanics we would have to develop to make it [believable] ... vehicles, plausible modern cities, a huge array of ranged weapons, etc. The modern day will most likely remain as a 'context' for all future games, something to tie them all together."

Of course, there's another reason why they don't need to make a modern day Assassin's Creed - Ubisoft already has a game on the way that will do much the same thing. "Watch_Dogs will scratch the itch for a modern day AC," teased McDevitt. "Just wait!"

Also off the agenda is anything that will wrap up the story of Assassin's Creed III star, Connor, any time soon. McDevitt said that it was "not very likely" that Ubisoft would continue with that character, not even in a spin-off movie, like the live-action short film Embers, which rounded out the story of Ezio from Assassin's Creed II.

"Embers took six months to make," explained McDevitt. "It was a big project, and beloved by all, but those teams are busy with other things right now. But we loved the project, so maybe we'll go that route again one day."

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is out now for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It comes to Wii U, PC Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on November 22nd.
