Review Roundup: Pokemon X and Pokemon Y

The Pokémon saga turns 17 years old this year, and with the release of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y it finally breaks out of the top down 2D sprite world that has seen it through at least three hardware generations.

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y are 3DS exclusive, and feature fully 3D polygon environments, extensive character customisations, hugely improved and seamless online features and a host of other improvements - or evolutions, if you want to be cute about it.

The critical reception has been nothing short of rapturous. "Everything about Pokémon X and Y instills a feeling of adventure that extends far, far beyond its campaign," gushes Polygon's 9.5/10 review. "It lets you take ownership of so much - from your wardrobe to your meticulously groomed team - and then lets you take that identity onto a global stage."

Nintendo Life praises developer Game Freak for "hitting the nail squarely on the head" and delivering "an excellent new addition to the series' expansive library". "The best new Pokémon for a decade" reckons Metro Game Central, while Joystiq declares it "hands-down the best in the series ." They all deliver 9/10 scores.

There are also 9/10s from IGN, which reckons X and Y "will be remembered as great transition point for the series’ transformation into an even more social, beautiful, and strategic game", and Eurogamer, which believes "the multitudinous additions to the proven formula will excite even the most jaded Pokémon fanatic."

Edge, meanwhile, delivers a slightly lower score - 8/10 - but praises the game not only for everything it adds to what came before, but for remembering that for many young players X and Y will be their first Pokémon experience. The review singles out the game's online features - "the joy of sharing moments of beauty and surprise with others" - and concludes that "it’s a delightful
