GTA V broke a few records

To the surprise of no one, Grand Theft Auto V launched with a bang, not only vying for the title of best reviewed game ever, but also driving a stolen bulldozer through a whole bunch of sales records in the process.

It became the UK's fastest selling game of all time after shifting 1.57 million copies in just one day, earning £65 million. That shatters the previous record, held by Call of Duty: Black Ops, which sold 1.41 million copies on its first day, back in 2010.

Even those numbers pale when you look at the global picture, where publisher Take Two estimates the game made $800 million in 24 hours. To put that in perspective, that's $200 million more than The Avengers took at the US box office in its entire theatrical run. In one day. Even taking into account the price difference between a game and a movie ticket, that's a huge haul.

“All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V,” said a press announcement Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, just in case anyone was unsure. “Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry’s new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence.”

Grand Theft Auto V is out now for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. You probably knew that.
