Pikmin 3 is the game Miyamoto wanted to make in 2001

It's been almost a decade since the disarmingly cute strategy puzzler Pikmin last graced a Nintendo console, but Shigeru Miyamoto is happy he's been able to revive the series for Wii U.

"In Pikmin 3, we've finally been able to include all of the elements that I wanted to include in Pikmin 1," the legendary game designer told Kotaku. "Often times, when you talk about movies, people say, oh the first one was the best. I feel Pikmin 3 has become sort of the ultimate version of Pikmin 1 if we'd had more power."

Miyamoto admits that the first game in the series, while hugely popular with critics and fans, was held back by the Gamecube hardware and the strict time limits the game imposed on players. For Pikmin 2, released in 2004, the focus was on making the game easier to get into, rather than polishing the core gameplay. For Pikmin 3, Miyamoto feels he's found the perfect balance.

"With Pikmin 3 we've really taken that... ideal and really tried to bring that to life in a way that encourages replayability all throughout the game."

Pikmin 3 has been in development since 2008, when it was set to launch on the Wii. Once the game's design outgrew that console, it was moved over to Wii U where the game pad offered more gameplay options.

Pikmin 3 is out on July 26th exclusively for Wii U.
