Why Wolfenstein: The New Order won't have multiplayer

There's a new Wolfenstein game coming out later this year. That fact alone should make the hearts of FPS fans soar, but when you consider that it's being developed by new developer MachineGames, founded by veterans of Starbreeze, the studio behind such inventive games as The Chronicles of Riddick and The Darkness, it's clear this could well be one of the best first-person shooters of the year.

What it won't have, however, is any multiplayer modes. Pete Hines, vice president of publisher Bethesda, has explained why.

"We talked to MachineGames about the game they wanted to make and multiplayer wasn't in their thought process," he told Eurogamer. "We're not going to force it down their throats and say, ‘Well, the last games did, so you have to do it.'"

Indeed, it seems that Bethesda has confidence that Machine Games know what they're doing "These guys do cool stuff. If you look at The Chronicles of Riddick or you look at The Darkness, those games have a creative element to them that is similar to the things they're doing in Wolfenstein and that's what attracted us to them, and that's what attracted us to their vision of Wolfenstein."

Wolfenstein: The New Order finds regular series hero BJ Blazowski waking up in an alternate 1960s where the Nazis have won the Second World War and taken over the planet using mysterious technology. Imagine a mashup of Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds and the Indiana Jones movies and you're on the right track.

The game will be out for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC later this year.
