Co-op heist game Payday 2 getting a physical release

Payday: The Heist was a cult hit for PC and PlayStation 3 gamers back in 2011. The downloadable treat took the four player co-op action of Left 4 Dead and transplanted it into a nail-biting armed robbery scenario, tasking players with pulling off the perfect crime.

Payback creator Overkill Software has since been bought out by Starbreeze, the developer behind The Darkness and Chronicles of Riddick, and work has been ongoing on the sequel for some time, with Xbox 360 added to the list of platforms. Now, publisher 505 Games has announced that the game won't just be a digital download release - Payback 2 will be hitting shop shelves as well.

"The game looks, sounds, and feels like those scenes from Heat and The Town and The Dark Knight," director Dave Goldfrab told VG247 in April, and he should know. He previously worked at DICE where he was lead designer on titles like Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3. He's promised the sequel will be a more detailed "bank robbery/crime simulator" with heists ranging from knocking off a simple jewellery store to epic multi-stage grand larceny. You'll be able to upgrade your skills, RPG style, and the gameplay will accommodate both trigger-happy maniacs and calmer, more calculating stealthy types.

Payday 2 will be pulling its balaclava down and cocking the sawed-off in August.
