Crytek has big plans for the future of Crysis

The third game in the Crysis series isn't out yet, but developer Crytek is already thinking about what will come next - and it has ambitious plans. Indeed, the game may not even be called Crysis 4 when it comes out.

"We are excited about the DNA of Crysis and of the franchise," studio head Cevat Yerli told Eurogamer. "There can be literally tonnes of titles out there within the franchise. Unlike Far Cry, this time around we feel very flexible about Crysis."

"I wouldn't name it Crysis 4 at this stage because it would be misleading," he said of the potential title. "Crysis 4 would imply the story just moves on."

The game isn't even in pre-production yet, because the studio wants it to be such a dramatic reinvention of the popular shooter series. "Normally in this time right now we would already have pre-production going on," Yerli says, "but because we want to make this something much more radical and new we are looking at it as a bit more of a long term thing. It's too early to talk about it for these reasons."

For now, we can look forward to Crysis 3, which is set for release in February 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Far Cry 3, Ubisoft's second sequel to the game which put Crytek on the map, is out at the end of November for the same formats.
