Now that Grand Theft Auto V is finally out in the open, Rockstar president and GTA writer Dan Houser has been giving a handful of interviews about the hotly anticipated return of one of gaming's biggest franchises.
One such interview was with Dutch website Gamers.nl, which asked whether Rockstar would ever consider creating a Grand Theft Auto game with a European setting. Fans of 1999's groovy GTA London expansion should look away now: it's not going to happen.
"I thought about it," Houser confessed. "A lot. Argued it every which way. I think, my own sense, speaking for myself and not for the company, is that it's as much a product of Americana. That's such a big part of the game."
"You could make a great game set in Amsterdam," he continued. "Would it be GTA? I don't know. We haven't done it, so I can't really offer a comment or an opinion on it. We've avoided it because we think that part of the experience of GTA is its engagement with America, or American media, American movies, American culture."
Grand Theft Auto V is due next Spring for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Set in the west coast city of Los Santos, it takes place on a game map five times larger than Rockstar's epic cowboy yarn, Red Dead Redemption. You'll play as three different characters, switching between them at will. Excited? Yeah, just a little.
