Battleship movie to receive videogame tie-in

Activision is teaming up with toymaker Hasbro to release a videogame version of Battleship, the upcoming blockbuster film adaptation of the classic naval strategy game.

Inspired by Universal Pictures' new action-adventure film starring Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna and Liam Neeson, the game combines the traditional strategic command elements of the board game with intense first-person combat.

It follows the exploits of an elite demolitions specialist who must simultaneously orchestrate land and sea-based strategies against a ferocious extraterrestrial menace that has been hiding beneath the ocean waves near the coast of Hawaii.

Battleship will be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in April 2012, with unique versions for Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS also on the way.

David Oxford of Activision said: "The game is next-gen naval warfare that thrusts players into the middle of humanity's last stand against an unfamiliar menace."

Activision has previously enjoyed success with its movie tie-in games for Hasbro's Transformers franchise, including last year's popular Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
