The Story

The life of a private investigator is never easy – but for Edward Carnby, even 'tricky' would be a Godsend. Ripped right out of the 1930s, he awakes to find himself tied to a chair at the mercy of a cult-like secret society bent on wielding the power of a mysterious stone.

But as Edward is led to the roof to meet his doom, something demonic rips apart the building and sets forth a terrifying chain of events. Scarred, scared and bewildered by his arrival in modern-day Manhattan, Alone in the Dark will see Edward discover his own dark destiny – and the terrible secrets hidden in the mysterious tunnels beneath the suburban sprawl of New York's Central Park.

The world's largest urban park may seem a strange setting for a Survival Horror videogame – but New York's Central Park is no ordinary nature spot. At once an object of envy for the rest of the western world and the centre of some extremely unusual phenomenon, it is curious how the real facts bring the park's very origins and true purpose into question…

• Once owned by the Dutch and considered of little worth, the island of Manhattan which hosts modern-day Central Park was traded in 1667 to the British at then great expense – the trade-rich island of Run. But why? What did the British know that the rest of the world didn't?
• At 843 acres and 6% of Mahattan's entire surface, Central Park is no small place – but still a comparatively tiny portion of the continent. And yet, over a third of America's bird species trace their migration route through it. Coupled with over-zealous insect activity, which saw bugs devastate the park's foliage a mere decade after construction, Central Park's recorded wildlife activity is both unusual and unnerving…
• Perhaps strangest of all, however, is the Park's underground. The Manhattan Project, which led to creation of the atomic bomb, began in these very caverns – but it merely built on the pre-existing tunnel network. Their original purpose is still unknown…
