Awards 2007: Technical Achievement

GAME.co.uk Awards 07

Like the greatest music, it not how much or how fast, but how it's used, that counts. Here we take a look at the best efforts to push gaming's technology forward in a way that enhances the experiences on offer as a result.

Technical Achievement Winner

CrysisCrysis (PC)

Hot young upstart developer Crytek burst onto the scene with the superb Far Cry a few years back, and followed it up with the brilliant but somewhat dodgily-named Crysis.

Crytek's own CryENGINE2 powers this excellent shooter, using techniques with terms such as Procedural Motion Warping and  Parallax Occlusion Mapping. Eh? Basically, lots of stuff what makes it look pretty.

Any doubts we had about awarding Crysis this prize were washed away when we saw some of the videos created by gamers experimenting with the game engine - such as the "3000 barrel explosion". Wow.

The addition of a world-class Sandbox Level Editor is just overkill! A worthy winner.

Technical Achievement Runner Up

Call of Duty 4Call of Duty 4 (PC | PS3 | X360)

Another shooter, Call of Duty 4 is backed up by a proprietary game engine of its own, incorporating a complex physics system for bullet behaviour as well as and some of the most technically accomplished visuals we've ever laid eyes on, with extremely clever use of effects like depth of field and dynamic HDR lighting which serve to make you forget on occasion that it is just a game.

Many materials (such as wood and plasterboard walls) can be shot straight through, with the engine calculating "Bullet Penetration" levels for every shot. Yes we know you could do it on the N64's GoldenEye, but it was not exactly this advanced. Add this to the destructive scenery (cars and buildings) and you have a dangerous, ever changing landscape where finding cover is not as simple as crouching behind the first object you see.

Best of all, the console versions run at one of the most consistent 60fps frame rates around. Great stuff.
