Modern videogames are not the flat, abstract blocks of basic colour and sound they once were - these days games are capable of representing complexities of human experience and difficult themes just like films are, while those children who grew up as gamers in the 80s are now fully-grown adults - and still gamers - who desire products that do not talk down to them.
As the industry has grown up, it has been necessary to regulate the sales of certain games to children by law - depending on their content.
You should be familiar with BBFC ratings through their use on Videos and DVDs, and more games than ever before are submitted to the BBFC for rating.
BBFC Ratings Explained:

Universal: Suitable for all.

Parental Guidance: Parents are advised that certain elements may be unsuitable for children, or may require parental explanation.

No one under the age of 12 may purchase or play this game.

No one under the age of 15 may purchase or play this game.

No one under the age of 18 may purchase or play this game.
