Call of Duty first hit PC in 2003, and in the space of five years the Call of Duty brand has taken the World War II first-person shooter to giddying new heights of gameplay excellence.
On PC, the original Infinity Ward-developed Call of Duty and its 2005 sequel, Call of Duty 2, received wide critical acclaim for their immersive, set-piece led take on the WWII FPS. Numerous expansion packs have followed, and an online CoD community has formed which has seen the Call of Duty brand become one of the web's most played shooters.
On consoles, the Call of Duty series has flourished on every home system this era. PS2 Call of Duty: Finest Hour was followed up by multiformat sequel Call of Duty 2: Big Red One - both developed by Treyarch, who later took over the reigns for the smash-hit Call of Duty 3 on Xbox 360, Wii, PS3 and also PC. And even handheld gamers have enjoyed their share of WWII action, with the excellent Call of Duty: Roads to Victory on PSP!
2007 saw Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare take gaming by storm, being voted your Game of the Year, and more recently your Favourite Game Ever - and this year the CoD team are back for more with Call of Duty: World at War!
