He's the most popular videogame hero in history by quite some margin, having sold nearly 200 million copies of his games - and that's before taking into account go-karting, golfing, football and all the other things he does when not saving the Princess.
The History of Super Mario
Mario's first appearance was in the Donkey Kong arcade game back in 1981, where his entire look came about because of the limitations of the computer animation of the time, and because creator Shigeru Miyamoto couldn't get the hair right - hence the cap!
In the time since Mario has been responsible for some of the most highly acclaimed games the world has ever seen, with Super Mario World, Mario 64 and Super Mario Kart all clearly deserving of a spot in the all-time top 10.
Mario is still Number One!
Mario has seen off all kinds of challengers to his throne over the last 26 years. Sonic may have been faster and cooler, Lara more shapely and posh and Max Payne somewhat more gritty, but Mario's brave effervescence in the shape of insurmountable odds always wins out, and will continue to do so throughout his latest space-faring journey.
