In the bad old days a licence was almost a guarantee of a terrible game. "People love that little alien" the executives would say, "it'll sell anyway, why bother trying?"

A huge landfill in the New Mexico desert, containing millions of copies of E.T. is why trying might be a good idea, buddy.

Although some publishers are still guilty of this, gamers have become more discerning, and demand more when their favourite stories become games - here we look at those that deliver.

WINNER: Peter Jackson's King Kong (Multiformat)

WINNER : King Kong

There's some real beauty within this beast.

By teaming Oscar-winning film director Peter Jackson with games-design visionary Michel Ancel (the chap behind Beyond Good & Evil, which we love, and Rayman), Ubisoft certainly hit upon a winning formula.

Featuring levels where you play as Jack Driscoll, beleagured by Skull Island's prehistoric pests, and later sections where you play as the titular beast-ape himself, the game is packed with subtle innovations and brings the experience of a blockbuster movie home like few games have. Brilliant.

1st Runner up : LEGO Star Wars (PS2)

Few words mean as much to adults and children alike than LEGO, Star Wars, and Videogames.

Combining the three could hardly fail, could it?

LEGO Star Wars is a delightful title packed with plenty to see and do, and it's one of the nicest surprises of 2005.

As our Review says - "It's extremely entertaining, rarely annoying, and always, always stylish." Read the rest.

RUNNER UP : Star Wars: Republic Commando ( PC | XBOX )

RUNNER UP : Star Wars: Republic Commando

Another Star Wars title, but this one couldn't be more different to LEGO Star Wars.

Republic Commando uses the Star Wars License in an interesting way, eschewing the usual way of getting it right in your face (the Star Wars theme music is not even present) and instead building a detailed and different, but still instantly recognisable underbelly to the Star Wars we know so well.

You're no hero, just a clone. No name, no face, no powers. Just one of the many billions who have shone briefly and brightly, and then died in combat in George Lucas' war-torn Universe.

As our Review says - "Where Republic Commando really comes into its own is in the fantastic immersion and atmosphere it offers." Read the rest.
