  • THQ action game Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine has been looking pretty special for quite a while. Now the publisher finally told us when we can expect to play it. Book a few days off work around 9th September, because that when the game hits shelves in the UK!

Released for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, youl be able to choose between the standard game, or the Collector Pack, which comes with a replica seal (not the animal kind of seal), an art book, sound track, character cards, and a neat box.

Whichever version you pick up, prepare yourself for a brilliant blend of melee combat and shooting, as your Space Marine battles his way through vast armies of enemies on a distant planet, charging through cover, letting rip with huge weapons, and downing some massive foes.

Wee expecting great things from this one. THQ been working on the game for absolutely ages, and the polish so far is undeniable. If you like outer space and shooting things to pieces, youe going to have a good September.

  • THQ has announced that its new shooter Warhammer 40000: Space Marine will receive a new co-operative add-on mode next month.

Titled Exterminatus, the downloadable extra mode will allow up to four players to assume roles in an elite Space Marine squad and face off against hordes of enemies as they seek to rack up high scores.

Gamers will be able to choose to play as Tactical Marines, Devastators or Assault Marines and utilise the special abilities of each class, as they earn progression towards their multiplayer ranks.

Exterminatus will feature two different scenarios, Assault on Hab Center Andreas and Escape from Kalkys Facility, each of which includes its own set of challenges and global leaderboards.

The new content will be made available free of charge in October 2011, while the main Warhammer 40000: Space Marine game hits stores this week.

Available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, it is a robust shooter/role-playing experience that puts players in control of Captain Titus of the Ultramarines, a genetically-enhanced warrior tasked with protecting humanity from alien threats.

  • Creative Assembly, the British studio behind the Total War series, has announced it has entered into an ongoing deal with tabletop role-playing specialist Games Workshop to bring its hugely successful Warhammer series to consoles and PC. SEGA will publish the games, with the first one due in 2014.

"With this year being our 25th anniversary. It seems fitting for us to embark on such a dream project with such a well-established partner," says studio director Tim Heaton. "The incredibly rich and detailed Warhammer world is something we grew up with, and has left an indelible imprint on us as both designers and gamers We'll be doing the Warhammer universe justice in a way that has never been attempted before. We're bringing those 25 years of experience and expertise in extremely high-scoring games to bear, delivering a Warhammer experience that videogamers will absolutely love."

It certainly seems like a match made in orc heaven, with Creative Assembly being one of the best strategy game developers around, and Warhammer being one of the most beloved strategy RPGs ever made.

Creative Assembly's Total War series has allowed players to command armies in Ancient Rome and Japan, Medieval Europe and the Napoleonic War. The most recent entry was this year's Total War: Shogun 2 expansion, Fall of the Samurai.

Warhammer is currently best known in video gaming for the Warhammer 40k science fiction spin-off. That franchise remains with THQ, which released the rather excellent Space Marine last year.
