Warhammer 40K Space Marine Product Details

Released on 09-Sep-2011

Finally a real alternative to the Gears Of War trilogy, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine offers breakneck action and gore galore in this barnstorming, blood-soaked tie-in!

You're a “living weapon of humanity”! In other words, Captain Titus, a muscle-packed, Chainsword-wielding Space Marine! And your planet needs you in this videogame adaptation of the classic Games Workshop strategy/tactics tabletop game. Strap into the armour-plated suit of said man-mountain and launch yourself into the unholy forces of Chaos in this third-person blood-fest!

  • Whip out that Weapon! – saddle up with a Stalker Pattern Bolter to take out the eye of an Ork from 20 feet away or alternatively, pile into the demon hordes and get personal with nothing but a Thunderhammer to wreak unstoppable havoc with
  • Death's in the Details – Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is as authentic as tie-ins get, bringing together the art style and universe of its tabletop game, and thrusting you right into the fight for the very first time in the game's history
  • Cover is for Cowards – forget hiding behind brick walls and popping up for the odd shot or three; that's for wussies (and Gears of War players). No, you are the wall and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine wants you to charge into the battlefield, shooting and tearing apart all and sundry with no respite and no chance of retreat. Time to man-up, people!
  • Tool Up with Chums – experience Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine's massive multiplayer battles, slicing gamers to pieces from all over the world. Then indulge in the awesome co-op play to bring real camaraderie to any skirmish with the dastardly Ork hordes.
  • THQ action game Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine has been looking pretty special for quite a while. Now the publisher finally told us when we can expect to play it. Book a few days off work around 9th September, because that when the game hits shelves in the UK!

Released for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, youl be able to choose between the standard game, or the Collector Pack, which comes with a replica seal (not the animal kind of seal), an art book, sound track, character cards, and a neat box.

Whichever version you pick up, prepare yourself for a brilliant blend of melee combat and shooting, as your Space Marine battles his way through vast armies of enemies on a distant planet, charging through cover, letting rip with huge weapons, and downing some massive foes.

Wee expecting great things from this one. THQ been working on the game for absolutely ages, and the polish so far is undeniable. If you like outer space and shooting things to pieces, youe going to have a good September.

  • THQ has announced that its new shooter Warhammer 40000: Space Marine will receive a new co-operative add-on mode next month.

Titled Exterminatus, the downloadable extra mode will allow up to four players to assume roles in an elite Space Marine squad and face off against hordes of enemies as they seek to rack up high scores.

Gamers will be able to choose to play as Tactical Marines, Devastators or Assault Marines and utilise the special abilities of each class, as they earn progression towards their multiplayer ranks.

Exterminatus will feature two different scenarios, Assault on Hab Center Andreas and Escape from Kalkys Facility, each of which includes its own set of challenges and global leaderboards.

The new content will be made available free of charge in October 2011, while the main Warhammer 40000: Space Marine game hits stores this week.

Available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, it is a robust shooter/role-playing experience that puts players in control of Captain Titus of the Ultramarines, a genetically-enhanced warrior tasked with protecting humanity from alien threats.

  • Zombie survival experience Dead Island has shuffled its way straight to the top of the UK all-formats chart.

Techland's eagerly awaited first-person action game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC was able to overcome last week's leader Deus Ex: Human Revolution, no doubt thanks to the buzz created by its stunning debut trailer earlier this year.

It was a strong week for new releases overall in the official GfK-ChartTrack rankings, with THQ's new sci-fi shooter Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine stomping into second place.

Third spot went to the holdover Driver: San Francisco, while fourth place was taken by another debutant, the PlayStation 3 exclusive FPS Resistance 3.

Meanwhile, there was also a top ten entry for Star Fox 3D, with the Nintendo 3DS remake of the classic Nintendo 64 title coming ninth.

Next week's new releases include an eclectic mix of titles, such as the quirky Kinect game The Gunstringer and God of War Collection: Volume II on PlayStation 3.

  • Titan

The premise of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (Xbox 360, PS3, PC) is titanic on a couple of fronts. A third-person action game taking place in a brutal, 41st millennium science fiction setting, it puts you in the shoes of Captain Titus, leader of the human Ultramarines, the Emperor's chosen armies in an ongoing battle for the survival of humanity.

It's your job to defend the forge world of Gaia, a strategically important planet dedicated to the production of weaponry, vehicles and tools used in battle. Work has ground to a halt on the planet due to the arrival of Ork invasion forces, while legions of Chaos Daemons, also keen to put the boot in and bring about the fall of mankind, lurk on the periphery. The Orks' main goal is to steal a Titan, a giant, walking robot fortress that could turn the tide of battle in their favour.

The game features eight or so hours of visceral combat sure to satisfy action fans, while developer Relic's dedication to the Warhammer license will delight followers of its source material, Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 tabletop miniature war game. Everything looks and feels authentic, from the detailing of the marines' armour to the scorched, futuristic war-torn environments.

    War machine

Captain Titus is basically the ultimate military badass, nine foot of superhuman meat adorned in power armour as heavy as a car and equipped with a selection of weapons primed to eviscerate anyone who stands his way. The game plays out from a third-person perspective and brings to mind Gears of War, minus that franchise's acclaimed cover system - Space Marines don't do hiding behind rocks, they charge into battle head first.

This is a tactic you'll employ nine times out of ten when faced by hostiles. As well as allowing you to turn opponents into red mist, it's also essential to keep you alive as performing close-quarters 'execution' moves recharges your health. You'll storm in, stun enemies and then finish them off with a swipe of your chainsaw, a stamp to their head or a spine-cracking axe blow to the back. It's brutal, uncompromising stuff, but a mechanic that makes for one of the most satisfying health pick-up ever.

Executions also build up a 'fury' metre that can be used to increase your melee attack abilities or slow down time if used when you're wielding a ranged weapon. While they aren't the game's primary focus, Titus has access to a number of weapons that can be used from a distance. You can carry up to four guns, from satisfyingly powerful assault rifles and grenade launchers to more exotic fare like a plasma gun that emits bursts of ionised gas and another which handles like a fire-spitting shotgun.

Titus also has a rationed Jump Pack move which lets you boost high into the air before crashing into the ground and shattering anyone standing nearby. Needless to say, in this hyper-violent world you're never short of ways to tear enemy limbs off or turn foes into wisps of superheated dust with the minimum of fuss.

    Something for everyone

Relic gets Space Marine's pacing just about right. Some players will occasionally find the endless battle nature of proceedings a little repetitive, while others will probably be irked by an inconsistent check-pointing system which can unnecessarily result in sections having to be replayed. However, the developer breaks things up with a couple of big set pieces like defending a train and a ruined bridge, and with a few (but arguably not enough) of the always fun Jump Pack sequences.

There's plenty to like here, but perhaps the biggest achievement in this bloody, action-centric take on the franchise is that it looks and feels exactly as a Warhammer 40,000 game should without alienating newcomers. Its presentation, story and characters offer a great amount of fan service, but its gruesome action gameplay will also appeal to people who've never played the tabletop game before.

    GAME's verdict

    Good:
+ Warhammer universe is brought to life.
+ Brutal, satisfying combat and weapons.
+ Cool new take on the health system.

    Bad:
    - Orks' cockney-geezer dialogue wears thin.
    - Some poor check-pointing.
    - Could do with a few more big set pieces.

  • THQ and Sumthing Else Music Works are teaming up to release a soundtrack album for the hit sci-fi shooter Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine.

Launching in retail and digital outlets this week, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine - The Soundtrack features a collection of tracks from the powerful orchestral score of the new Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC title from Relic Entertainment.

The music was composed by Cris Velasco, known for his soundtracks for the God of War series, alongside Sascha Dikiciyan, composer for last year's movie spin-off Tron: Evolution.

Together, the duo has created epic themes and Hollywood-style arrangements that perfectly accompany the grand, cinematic action seen in the game itself.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine puts players in the role of Captain Titus of the Ultramarines as they gun their way through a brutal and involving recreation of Games Workshop's grim sci-fi universe.

The title has proven a big hit among UK gamers, holding on to second place in the all-formats sales chart for two straight weeks.

  • Creative Assembly, the British studio behind the Total War series, has announced it has entered into an ongoing deal with tabletop role-playing specialist Games Workshop to bring its hugely successful Warhammer series to consoles and PC. SEGA will publish the games, with the first one due in 2014.

"With this year being our 25th anniversary. It seems fitting for us to embark on such a dream project with such a well-established partner," says studio director Tim Heaton. "The incredibly rich and detailed Warhammer world is something we grew up with, and has left an indelible imprint on us as both designers and gamers We'll be doing the Warhammer universe justice in a way that has never been attempted before. We're bringing those 25 years of experience and expertise in extremely high-scoring games to bear, delivering a Warhammer experience that videogamers will absolutely love."

It certainly seems like a match made in orc heaven, with Creative Assembly being one of the best strategy game developers around, and Warhammer being one of the most beloved strategy RPGs ever made.

Creative Assembly's Total War series has allowed players to command armies in Ancient Rome and Japan, Medieval Europe and the Napoleonic War. The most recent entry was this year's Total War: Shogun 2 expansion, Fall of the Samurai.

Warhammer is currently best known in video gaming for the Warhammer 40k science fiction spin-off. That franchise remains with THQ, which released the rather excellent Space Marine last year.

One for the hardcore
Considering this was made by the same studio that produced Dawn of war it isn't surprising to see the attention to detail here for the 40k universe. The game graphically looks great, the over the top size and scale of the game is reproduced perfectly. The game itself is relatively short as far as the story goes, but has some good set piece moments decent voice acting and is paced well enough so as not to become boring too quickly. The multiplayer is where you will get some longevity from the title. It follows the now standard fare of levelling up, unlocking weapons, armour and perks to suit your style of play. Also the recently added horde mode is a nice alternative to competitive multiplayer that will add a few more hours to the title. Overall it could have done with being a little longer but for the price now its worth a go if you were thinking of trying it out.

What a waste - should have been much more...
This should have been the first decent Shooter to come from the Warhammer 40k franchise - sadly is wasn't to be. The graphics quality is not great even on highest settings imo especially with the kind of video hardware many people have these days, the textures just aren't detailed enough, sound is bland, the bolter effects etc. are just not chunky enough which kills the atmosphere. Game-play wise it's fun for 5 mins, but there's a lack of real depth which THQ/Relic try and cover up with the huge amount of gore you get on kills, sadly this ain't enough to save this title for me. Having been a massive Warhammer 40k fan for nearly 20 years, playing everything that's been released on the PC from the franchise (Dawn of War 1 2, Space Hulk original and the revamped version) I have to say this is probably one of the worst realized games of the lot, it could have been so much more that a bog standard 3rd person shooter with Space Marine models. The game has mostly sold off the back of WH 40k fans and most 40K fans have their favorite Marine chapters, and the pre-order skin packs were used to hook more people into buying this game than would have otherwise. End of the day when the USED price for this game is now higher than the NEW price it tells you something...this was a complete letdown, especially to 40K fans, and my guess is people have been returning or trying to get rid of their copies of this game in droves! Lets hope WH 40K Dark Millennium is out soon!

Poor game considering the Dawn of War 2 series was brilli…
Well, i have to use the Dawn of War 2 as a reference point as it was also made by Relic/THQ.... Dawn of war 2 had a great story, good music and wargear. This game has neither. The levels are very linear and after a while it gets boring. The game might as well have been mute the music was so bland. There was very little keeping the story on, little narration and it felt like you were fighting orks for the sake of it. Just seemed like a rushed or poorly thought out game when it should have been great (think Batman Arkham Asylum). To fix this game, you'd need decent music, actual wargear and maybe a few more cinematics. What Relic/THQ should have done was do a 3rd person Dawn of War 2 hack n slash/shooter where you can outfit your squad with whatever weapon. THAT is what this game should have been... a shame as i have the collectors edition and the goodies aren't bad...

I think the game is just a beta test for the combat system they may use in Vigils MMO tbh. The graphics quality reminded me of the zoomed in play on Dawn of War 2, except the graphics in that were sharper . Very disappointing game, as said by Henh boring game after like 5 mins, didn't even bother with the multiplayer it was that bad.
