• THQ invites fans to vote on UFC Undisputed 3 cover star

  Mixed martial arts fans are being invited to pick their favourite athlete to appear on the front cover of the upcoming UFC Undisputed 3.

  From now until September 30th 2011, publisher THQ is encouraging fans to get online and cast votes for one of five renowned UFC combatants, who will act as the face of the new Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 title.

  Gamers can choose between Frankie Edgar, Georges St-Pierre, Anderson Silva, Jon Jones or Cain Velasquez, all champions in their respective weight divisions who are keen to claim the honour of becoming a cover star.

  UFC President Dana White said: "We love making our fans a part of the process and we'll leave this one up to them."

  THQ is billing UFC Undisputed 3 as the best MMA title to date, with the game set to feature more than 150 real-life fighters, a simplified control scheme, new moves and improved visuals.

  It is set to make its console debut in January next year.

• UFC Undisputed 3 demo available to download now

  THQ has announced the availability of a new demo of its latest mixed martial arts simulation, UFC Undisputed 3.

  The latest instalment in the series is coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in February 2012 and will be the biggest and best MMA game to date, with more characters, modes and options than ever before.

  In the demo, fans can get to grips with the new title's improved grappling gameplay while also getting a first taste of Pride Mode, a new career option that lets them travel to real-life venues across the world, including the Japanese MMA circuit.

  Playable characters in the trial version include Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, Wanderlei Silva and Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson, with the full game set to include more than 150 athletes.

  THQ's Danny Bilson said: "We are eager to see how our fans worldwide embrace this engaging and powerful mixed martial arts gameplay experience."

  Other characters who will feature in UFC Undisputed 3 include the likes of Georges St-Pierre, Alistair Overeem and Cain Velasquez.

• Extensive DLC programme announced for UFC Undisputed 3

  THQ has revealed its busy plans for downloadable content for UFC Undisputed 3, the latest instalment in its acclaimed mixed martial arts series.

  Following the launch of the game itself on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this month, fans can look forward to a series of DLC packs over the coming weeks, including new fighters, historic bouts, career boosts and early access to unlockable bonuses.

  Gamers will be able to get hold of new characters such as Joe Lauzon, Rory MacDonald, Jung Chan-Sung, John Hathaway and Pascal Kraus, as well as various classic fights and extra create-a-fighter content.

  Meanwhile, those who choose to purchase the season pass will be able to access all of the planned content for a single reduced price.

  THQ's Danny Bilson said: "UFC Undisputed 3 marks our largest offering of downloadable content to date for the franchise."

  Those wishing to get a taste of the action can download a playable demo via Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network now.

• UFC Undisputed 3 online features announced

  The online features available for UFC Undisputed 3 have been announced by THQ and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), featuring franchise-first community content and other perks for online gamers.

  Available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the game allows players to engage in intense toe-to-toe combat with a variety of UFC fighters and features the commentary of official commentators Bas Rutten and Stephen Quadros as well as a number of real-life stadiums.

  Online content will also be tweaked for this edition of the popular game, with matchmaking and leaderboard generation made more accurate to ensure fair and exciting games.

  UFC Undisputed 3 will also automatically save highlights from fights, allowing gamers to watch them back again or show off their accomplishments to their friends.

  This will be facilitated by a community hub, making it easier for people to connect over the UFC network and share their created fighters and logo designs.

  Dutch heavyweight sensation Alistair Overeem recently announced his intention to join the roster for the upcoming version of the officially-sanctioned game.

• Kingdoms of Amalur reigns supreme in UK charts

  EA's new role-playing game Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has ascended to the top of the UK all-formats chart in its first week of release.

  The much-anticipated title from 38 Studios and Big Huge Games dethroned Final Fantasy XIII-2 at the summit of the GfK-ChartTrack rankings, becoming the first brand new series to top the charts since last year's Dead Island.

  It was not the only debutant to excel this week, as comic book-inspired shooter The Darkness II came in third, behind the latest Final Fantasy game.

  Last week's runner-up Metal Gear Solid HD Collection came fourth, while the ever-popular FIFA 12 rounded out the top five.

  Other new titles to debut in the top 40 included Deep Silver's quirky relationship drama Catherine and EA's sports sequel Grand Slam Tennis 2.

  Next week will see the return of THQ's acclaimed UFC Undisputed mixed martial arts series, with UFC Undisputed 3 coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

• UFC Undisputed 3 reigns supreme over UK charts

  THQ's new mixed martial arts game UFC Undisputed 3 has performed an aggressive takedown on its competitors in the UK all-formats chart this week.
  
  The acclaimed Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 title debuted in first place in the official GfK-ChartTrack rankings, edging ahead of perennial favourite FIFA 12, which was back up to second.
  
  Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 once again showed off its impressive staying power to climb back up to third place, while Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games achieved its highest ever chart position with a fourth-place finish.
  
  Aside from UFC Undisputed 3, no other new games entered the top 40 this week, though there was a newcomer to the top ten: Activision's sleeper hit Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, which continued its steady ascent up the chart to seventh.
  
  Next week, the charts will be well and truly shaken up by the debut of PlayStation Vita, Sony's newest handheld console, as well as a number of blockbuster games.
  
  PS Vita launch titles such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss and WipEout 2048 are sure to make a splash, as are multiplatform games like the sci-fi shooter Syndicate.

  Back with a bang

  Publisher THQ should be commended for its recent approach to its popular mixed martial arts game series. Having initially opted to follow the annual update release strategy popular with many sports franchises, it delivered the first UFC Undisputed in May 2009 and a follow-up 12 months later. Both were great games, but given how little the roster of fighters had changed and the short development schedule, the sequel wasn't as polished or distinct as it might have been given some breathing room.

  The company opted to change tack with the third game in the series, giving developer Yuke's over 18 months to work with the formula. And while UFC Undisputed 3 doesn't rewrite the rulebook, the inclusion of streamlined controls, the addition of the brutal Pride discipline, and a massive influx of fresh fighters shows it has done much to add to and refine the experience, leading to the most accessible and fully featured Undisputed game to date.

  

  Loud and proud

  UFC Undisputed's combat has always delivered heavy, realistic feeling blows, and now it's more varied too. The introduction of Featherweight and Bantamweight classes add faster and more agile fighters to the mix, but the biggest addition for hardcore fans comes in the form of Pride, a defunct Japanese promotion famed for its viciousness and acquired by the UFC in 2007.

  Pride switches the action from the cage to a ring, matches last just three rounds, and there's a slightly different rule set, allowing for soccer-style kicks, head stomps and ground knees to the head. It's generally a superbly authentic feeling and bloody mode, with many playable legends including Bob Sapp, Royce Gracie and Don Frye, as well as younger versions of current UFC fighters.

  Through the ranks

  The main career mode sees players attempt to ascend the ranks from the low-level World Fighting Alliance through to the UFC and eventually Pride, building up their character and move sets through a combination of fights, basic training and more specialised camps. Between fights players receive action points to spend on training routines like heavy bag drills, tyre flipping and sparring. These mini-games can be played manually or automated for an instant but less significant increase to your stats.

  Attending training camps specialising in different disciplines enables you to learn new moves specific to that camp which can then be developed, and the game definitely nails the feeling of character progression. Your fighter's skills increase notably as they mature and expand their move set, making bouts more varied, strategic and entertaining the more you play.

  

  It's a knockout

  Yuke's has also put significant work into tweaking and refining what was already an excellent fighting system. The difference between light and heavy blows is more pronounced, with big hits resulting in a Fight Night-like slow motion effect, while damage recovery between rounds has been introduced and drops in stamina temporarily affect your base stats. Elsewhere, there's an optional amateur control scheme for beginners and improved visuals, with new camera angles, improved facial animations and the introduction of fighter entrances.

  From the array of improvements and new features, it's not hard to believe this game was given a more generous development window than its predecessors. It might not reinvent the wheel, but its realistic, fast-paced action and accessible nature combine to deliver what will widely be perceived as the best mixed martial arts game to date.

• Uncharted: Golden Abyss tops charts in PS Vita launch week

  The PlayStation Vita has blitzed the UK sales chart in its much-anticipated first week of release, with Uncharted: Golden Abyss leading the assault.

  Nathan Drake's debut handheld adventure topped the UK all-formats chart following its introduction alongside the snazzy new portable, accounting on its own for 31 per cent of all PS Vita game sales.

  Coming in second in the GfK-ChartTrack rankings was the PS Vita version of FIFA Football, with other Ps Vita titles reaching the top 40 including WipEout 2048, F1 2011 and Ridge Racer.

  Away from PS Vita's success, EA and Starbreeze Studios' revival of the Syndicate franchise on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC claimed a seventh-place start.

  Other top sellers included former number one UFC Undisputed 3, football favourite FIFA 12 and acclaimed platformer Rayman Origins, which saw a massive sales boost thanks to its new PS Vita version.

  Next week, a new batch of games will arrive on the scene to challenge PS Vita's dominance, including EA's SSX reboot and Nintendo's Mario Party 9.

• SSX reaches peak of UK sales chart

  EA's snowboarding revival game SSX has positioned itself at the summit of the UK all-formats sales chart in its debut week.

  The acclaimed Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 title has become the first SSX title ever to debut at number one in the official GfK-ChartTrack rankings, more than doubling the first-week sales of the previous top performer SSX 3 back in 2003.

  A five-year wait for the new SSX helped the winter sports extravaganza to pip its EA stablemate FIFA 12 to top spot, though the ever-popular football game also had an impressive week, climbing two places back up to second.

  Third place went to another debutant, Nintendo's Mario Party 9 for Wii, while PlayStation Vita hit Uncharted: Golden Abyss placed fourth, having topped the charts last week.

  Other top-selling titles included the likes of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, UFC Undisputed 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

  Next week will see a number of big new games hitting shelves, including crossover fighting game Street Fighter X Tekken and Nintendo 3DS stealth adventure Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D.

• Fight Night team developing EA's official UFC game

  When EA bought the rights to the Ultimate Fighting Championship from previous license holder THQ earlier this year, it was unclear what the publisher planned to do with the series. Now we know. It's handed it over to the development team that built the award-winning boxing simulation Fight Night Round 4 and Fight Night Champion.

  The news came as a surprise to creative director Brian Hayes, however. "When we found out that EA and the UFC would be working together, the team was excited," he said. "Most of the team didn't even know about it until the announcement at E3. We were all watching it together and when Andrew Wilson and Dana White took the stage, everybody starting cheering. It was great."

  And despite having made their name in boxing games, the team had been hoping to get their hands on an MMA title. "For me personally, the UFC is something that I grew up with. I remember watching the first UFC events when I was a teenager and it's amazing to see how they have evolved and flourished. Ultimately, we're huge fans, we think we have a great team and we are really excited to be taking on this new challenge. We look forward to bringing the UFC video game experience to new heights."

  EA's official UFC game has yet to be given a title, or target platforms, but will be out sometime in 2013.
