UFC headliner Michael Bisping talks UFC 2009 Undisputed, UFC 100 and of course... baby oil?!
Hi Michael, really appreciate you taking the time to talk to us.
No problem!
Can you tell us a bit about UFC?
UFC stands for Ultimate Fighting Championship. It's a combat sport fought over three five minute rounds. It's a combination of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) which is Boxing, Kickboxing, Jujitsu and Muay Thai. It's the fastest-growing sport in America, the number one indoor sport in the world and a very very exciting explosive sport. UFC has the best fighters in the world competing, and because you can use such an array of different fighting skills, it makes it much more interesting. That's UFC in a nutshell.
In gaming, probably the nearest comparison to UFC 2009 Undisputed are the wrestling games. How do you guys look at wrestling?
I've got no problem with professional wrestling whatsoever. It's not a sport, it's entertainment, and that's fine, you know? I have no problem with that. A lot of people grow up watching wrestling, and when they've grown out of it they'll turn to the UFC because it's more real. I think wrestling has its place – if people like to go and watch grown men covered in baby oil roll around and pretend to fight then more power to ‘em!
Wrestling has its place – if people like to watch grown men covered in baby oil pretend to fight then more power to 'em!
I know there is some crossover with fighters moving from wrestling to UFC – is that common?
No not really. Some wrestlers are coming over to the sport, like Brock Lesnar, obviously – Ken Shamrock was actually an MMA fighter first, then went to WWE, then came back again. Bobby Lashley just fought MMA – so there are a few starting to do it. Especially since the UFC is becoming so big and lucrative to be involved with. It's attracting a wider array of athletes.
Can you tell us a bit about what you've been involved with in UFC recently?
Well I'm on the fight card for UFC 100 later this year, but recently I've been a coach on The Ultimate Fighter, a reality TV show that's like Big Brother with fighters.
Usually with Ultimate Fighter you have fighters living in a house, train four hours a day, each week two guys fight until obviously someone loses and goes home, and the winner stays on. This year it's USA vs UK, I was the UK Coach, training the UK team. The program's recently started on Bravo on Sunday nights, and playing every Sunday and Wednesday on Virgin and Setanta.
Who are the big fighters in UFC at the moment that we can expect to see in the game?
Rampage Jackson's one of the biggest fighters out there, Georges St-Pierre, Forest Griffin, I'm in there, Anderson Silva… the thing is the UFC has the best fighters in the world, bar none – it's the premier league of fighters. Obviously there's certain stars amongst them – the UFC doesn't do any official rankings, but the goal of every fighter in small organisations is to fight in the UFC. The ones in the game are the best of the best.
When you play the game it's going to give a better understanding of UFC to newcomers, bring it out to a wider audience.
What do you think of the game, UFC 2009 Undisputed?
I LOVE the game. I think it represents the sport fantastically! When you play the game it's going to give a better understanding of UFC to newcomers, bring it out to a wider audience; maybe even get more people trying it out and joining a gym.
What else are you playing?
I play LOTS of games – I've always been a gamer ever since I was a kid. What am I playing now? Street Fighter IV – loving that at the moment. I'm always Ken or Ryu. I play it online but I tend to get my arse kicked!
What else... um, Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. is pretty good. Call of Duty 4 as well... y'know, I buy nearly every decent game that comes out – I've got this massive chest of games in my front room that get played for about ten days, two weeks maybe until something new comes out and it gets put down. One of the best games I've played is Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I love my PS3!
So you're gonna be online playing UFC Undisputed?
Yeah, absolutely!
Are you going to pick yourself or make your own Create A Fighter?
You know, I think I'll pick myself and put my online name as ‘The Original Michael Bisping' so when people see me online that actually means they're playing ME on UFC 2009 Undisputed!
Thanks Michael.

Mark steps into the Octagon...
UFC (short for Ultimate Fighting Championship) is a brand that seems tailor-made for gaming. It's got all of the fanfare of pro wrestling together with some seriously no-nonsense action; a huge international following; and the Beat 'Em Up genre is positively crying out for something new and interesting right now (even Street Fighter IV can only do so much on its own). But, for whatever reason, no-one has really been able to fully capture the explosiveness and variety of UFC's signature Mixed Martial Arts battles – until, possibly, now.
Blown away
UFC 2009 Undisputed isn't the first UFC title in the history of gaming, but it is the first in a good few years, and by all accounts it's going to blow its predecessors away. Having said that, to begin with at least, it isn't the most pick-up-and-play fighter we've ever come across.
They take some getting used to, but UFC 2009 Undisputed's controls should make for the most comprehensive MMA experience ever.
Unlike most fighting games, the controls in UFC 2009 Undisputed are really quite complex, boiling down to two distinct ways of fighting. Standing is easy enough: movement is on the left stick (with faster movement gained by pushing down the stick), the four fascia buttons each make you attack with a different limb, and holding the left trigger makes your strikes stronger, while holding the left bumper initiates special attacks – like leaping roundhouses which make for some spectacular knockouts. Blocking is done with the right trigger for low blocks, and the right bumper for high blocks – meaning you can't just hold down one block button and expect your fighter to be fully defended. In a standing fight, UFC 2009 Undisputed is all about working the openings.
So far, so fighting game – right? Wrong. Just when you start to get that familiar feeling, UFC 2009 Undisputed has your opponent tackle you to the mat – and basically sit on top of you, pounding you senseless until your mouthguard falls out.
Reigning down
A couple of frustrating KOs in, though, and you start to get your head around UFC 2009 Undisputed's analogue stick grappling controls. Flick the right stick and your fighter will try and tackle your rival to the mat – and if they manage that, from there you've a wealth of ways to go. Slight quarter-turns of the right stick move your fighter, and pressing the same stick down executes submission manoeuvres – or, if you manage to get yourself into the potentially match-winning Mount position, you can just reign blows until you render your foe unconscious.
You will have to be wary though – getting into the most advantageous positions on the mat can take several transitions, all of which are vulnerable to being countered and you potentially on the end of a submission yourself. In all, they take some getting used to, but UFC 2009 Undisputed's controls should make for the most comprehensive MMA experience ever.
UFC 2009 Undisputed experts will come to define their own personal strategies based on who they've picked and who they're facing.
The great news for hardcore UFC fans is that UFC 2009 Undisputed doesn't dilute the sport's intricacies in either standing or mat fighting forms. Fighters themselves are lifelike combinations of Boxing, Kick Boxing or Muay Thai for the standing style, and Wrestling, Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for takedowns – so the in-game fighters feel noticeably the same as their real-life counterparts, and UFC 2009 Undisputed experts will come to define their own personal strategies based on who they've picked and who they're facing. No two fights in UFC 2009 Undisputed should be the same – and needless to say it all looks absolutely immaculate, rendered in full, bonecrunching HD on next-gen systems.
Personalise your pugilist
That bodes well for the many modes in UFC 2009 Undisputed. The complex controls may not make for the most instantly playable post-pub Multiplayer, but online play should be a particularly big draw – while the Career mode, together with its own Create A Fighter option (which THQ are being particularly coy about at the mo), should really let you personalise your pugilist to your favoured forms of fighting.
Non UFC fans meanwhile might also want to keep UFC 2009 Undisputed on their radar if they're at all interested in checking out a different type of fighting game. Like the brand itself excitement for the game seems to be growing, and hope is high that this could make a big impact amidst the usually quiet early summer videogame release period.

3 years agoUFC 2009 Undisputed (with Downloadable Content)UFC: Undisputed is here and it packs one hell of a punch. Fans have had to wait more than five years for a legitimate recreation of the fastest growing sport in the world. UFC:Undisputed doesn’t disappoint, developers Yukes Media Creation have done wonders to make the virtual octagon to be as brutal and fun to watch as the real life UFC.The game comes with a roster of over 80 fighters and is broken down into 5 different weight classes. All of the big names make it into the game such as Frank Mir, Chuck Liddell and Georges St-Pierre. I was happy with the roster, though a few of my personal favourites have been cut from the final roster. Rising UFC star Clay Guida was cut due to the clipping issues presented by his lengthy hair on his character model. Randy Couture also did not make the game, this is rumoured to be because of a high appearance fee. Fighters that have made the grade are very realistic and are highly-detailed with over 30,000 polygons used for fighter models. I like th
