Nintendo has confirmed the release date for the eagerly awaited Super Smash Bros Wii U. The crossover fighting game will launch in the UK on 5 December, in a variety of bundles.

You'll be able to pick up the game with a GameCube controller adaptor, for those who want the true arcade input feel, or you can opt for a package containing a Mario amiibo figurine. Amiibo is Nintendo's new “toys to life” product line, and Super Smash Bros will be the first game to take full advantage, allowing you to use the Wii U game pad as a near-field communication platform so you can swap toys and characters, as in Skylanders and Disney Infinity.

The first wave of amiibo figures includes Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, Fox McCloud, Samus Aran, Pikachu, Kirby and more. A second wave is due before Christmas, with Luigi, Zelda, Diddy Kong and others.

Super Smash Bros is out now for the 3DS, where it has shifted 2.8m copies worldwide already. You'll be able to transfer customised characters from one version of the game to the other.
