Masahiro Sakurai may not be as famous as his fellow Nintendo developers, such as Shigeru Miyamoto, but in the Smash Bros series he created one of the venerable company's most polished and enduring franchises.
That may be coming to an end, however. Sakurai-san has told Game Informer that with Super Smash Bros for the Wii U, he's pushed the game's energetic arena combat further than he previously thought possible, and doubts he'd be able to top it in another sequel.
I cant positively declare there wont be [another Smash Bros. game], he told the US mag. With both Melee and Brawl, I made those games with the thought that there wouldnt be any more sequels. Thus, I really cant deny the chance for another. However, as for myself, I dont think there will be.
In terms of scope, and in terms of sheer number of characters, we went beyond our limits long ago, he continued, explaining that every time a Smash Bros game has pushed the limits, it's made his job harder next time around. You could say that all the effort in the past to stretch out, keep pushing myself, and provide all these extra merits wound up tightening the noose around my neck in the future.
Sakurai-san admits that the series could still continue, if someone else were to take over, but confesses that he has trouble picturing someone else in his place.
All of which makes Super Smash Bros Wii U all the more special and it was pretty bloomin' special already. It's out now for, you guessed it, the Wii U. A 3DS version is also available.
