The Star Fox team triumphantly returns to one of its greatest missions with the remake of Star Fox 64 in full 3D. The entire Star Fox universe spreads out realistically into the depths of the Nintendo 3DS screen while the 3D visuals give the player a clearer grasp of distance and position. This makes the game more approachable and intuitive, thereby allowing players to focus on the action. Star Fox 64 3D also puts the two screens of the Nintendo 3DS system to use, with the top screen featuring 3D game play and the bottom screen displaying the various characters and their dialogue.

• Nintendo explains Star Fox 3DS tilt controls

  We can wait to get back into the cockpit of our Arwing alongside Slippy Toad and Fox McCloud, and now Nintendo revealed a little bit more about what we can expect when we finally get out hands on Star Fox 3DS later this year.

  Speaking with investors this weekend, Nintendo president and all-round good guy Satoru Iwata explained how a new control method would be available in the game, which is a remake of the brilliant adventure Star Fox 64.

  Star Fox 3DS is "a newly-arranged version of Star Fox 64, the most well-known game of all the 3D shooting games in the time of Nintendo 64, and in which we offer a new feature that uses a gyro sensor to control Arwing, who flies around the 3D space," said Iwata (thanks, Eurogamer). We reckon this will be a brilliant way of swooping past enemies and dodging around asteroids, and we can wait to try it out.

  While wee on the subject, Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS is getting in on the tilt controls act, too, by the looks of it. Apparently, youl be able to use the gyro sensor to aim Link slingshot. Bring it on.

  Star Fox 3DS will be hitting shelves in the UK later this year. Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS will be here on the 17th of June!

• Star Fox 64 3DS dated

  We can wait for this one. Star Fox 64 was one of the very best games to be released for Nintendo classic N64 console, so the news that it headed to the 3DS has gotten us all excited. Now we finally have a release date to cling to, as well. Star Fox 64 3DS will be hitting stores around the UK on 9th September! Not long to go!

  That two days before US gamers get it, too, which is always nice.

  Star Fox is a frantic space-based dogfighting game which sees a group of animal heroes ganging together to save the universe from certain destruction or something like that. It was the game that first introduced rumble controllers to the world back in the late 1990s, and it coming to Nintendo handheld console with a brace of new tweaks, such as tilt controls although you can opt to stick with buttons a multiplayer opponent cam and revamped 3D visuals. We reckon those asteroid sections are going to look just great!

  It going to be a great year for the 3DS, by the looks of it. After that, youl have Super Mario 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D to get stuck into before Christmas. Hooray!

• Deus Ex stays ahead of Driver in charts

  Deus Ex: Human Revolution has managed to extend its lead in the UK all-formats chart for a second week, despite a strong debut for Driver: San Francisco.

  Square Enix's acclaimed sci-fi shooter for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC has maintained its place in the official GfK-ChartTrack rankings a week after its long-awaited debut.

  Driver: San Francisco had to settle for second place in its first week on release, but it was a good performance nevertheless for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii title, which is the first new entry in the popular series for four years.

  Following behind the new Driver was former chart leader Zumba Fitness and sports game Rugby World Cup 2011, while Lego Pirates of the Caribbean came fifth.

  Meanwhile, EA's latest American football title Madden NFL 12 made its debut in sixth place.

  Next week's chart will see the debut of a number of high-profile titles, including zombie action game Dead Island on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, as well as Star Fox 64 3D on Nintendo 3DS.

• Star Fox 3DS Review

  Space opera

  With state of the art visuals and gameplay, 1997's Star Fox 64 marked a high point for Nintendo series and the shoot'em up genre in general. 14 years later, can a scene-for-scene, shot-for-shot remake of the original - remastered with 3D visuals and new optional motion controls - repeat the trick?

  For those who've never played it, Star Fox puts you in the shoes of Fox McCloud, the leader of a team of mercenaries on a mission to defeat Andross, an ingenious scientist driven to madness and now wreaking chaos across the entire galaxy. The game sees you controlling a number of vehicles, including Fox's standard craft, the Arwing, and an amphibious articulated one called the Landmaster.

  Fly by rail

  It's largely an on-rails shooter, meaning you're guided along fixed paths through environments, with the ability to manoeuvre and temporarily slow your movement to complete objectives. Other stages of the game, including multiple boss battles, allow you to move freely within a large arena to engage in combat.

  Swooping, somersaulting and barrel rolling with the 3DS circle pad is comfortable, instinctive and satisfying, although the gyroscopic controls aren't quite as smooth. While tilting the system works well when making dramatic sweeps across the screen, performing more subtle movements is much tougher and waving the 3DS around reduces the 3D effect.

  Shining star

  With improved visuals, Star Fox's varied environments from starry levels to molten and aquatic worlds look better than ever. Explosions are great, the water effects are fantastic and the 3D presentation is always solid, although in some areas the draw distance remains limited, meaning objects only pop up on screen when theye already quite close to you.

  It isn't a long game in the traditional sense. With fast-paced, short-lived levels, it a title that perfectly suited to portable play, and with help from your wingmen Peppy, Slippy and Falco (all of whom, like Fox, are cuddly animals), you can blast your way through its seven short missions in just a couple of hours.

  A fox, re-mastered

  However, the real challenge comes in unlocking the dozen or so tougher planets you probably missed during your first play through. To do so you'll need to complete a variety of objectives, from keeping crew members alive to racking up high scores or flying through a series of rings. With plenty to unlock, plus a new Score Attack mode that lets you revisit any planet and aim for a new high score, Star Fox offers loads of replay value.

  It may irk some that Nintendo is relying so heavily on its back catalogue of software when it comes to releasing games for its new handheld, but Star Fox 3DS is a stunning re-mastering of the original, a brilliant game for newcomers to the series and a great trip down memory lane for long-time fans. If all remakes were this good, we'd have no problem playing many more of them.

• Star Fox 3DS Review

  Head for the stars

  Star Fox 64 was a bit of a masterpiece when it first graced Nintendo hardware back in 1997, but the tech wasn't quite up to the job. The game, which was called Lylat Wars here in the UK, featured plenty of deep space dogfighting action, but the graphics were pretty simplistic, and the frame-rate was very stuttery. It was a great game, but it could have been even better.

  Now it is even better, thanks to a beautiful remake that's just burst onto Nintendo's amazing 3DS handheld. Fox McCloud and friends have never looked this good: with new graphics, great controls, and hardware that can really handle all of the game's explosive action, this is an even more brilliant reworking than The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time 3D - and that, friends, is saying something.

  Slippy and Co.

  You know the drill. The universe - or at least the Lylat planetary system - is in peril, and it's up to sharp-shooting Fox McCloud and his trio of co-pilots to save the day. Andross, a big villain from a few year's back, is causing trouble from his prison plant of Venom, so the Star Fox crew set out to put him in his place - by blasting everything they can see.

  The Lylat System is a huge place, but the game smartly carves the campaign up into seven levels as you hop towards Venom. The brilliant thing is that those seven levels will take you across different paths depending on how you play. If you're just scrimping by, for example, the first level, Corneria, will lead to Meteos, the asteroid belt, where you'll face off against relatively easy foes. If you're on form, though, you may get to turn left and head to Sector Y and then onward - where the fights, and the bosses, are much tougher.

  Whichever route you take, Star Fox offers some frantic blasting, as the game divides its time between on-rails sections - although you can still move around a fair amount and pick your targets - and the famous all-range mode, in which Fox is free to zip through arenas headed wherever he wants as he takes on bosses and massive waves of extra-terrestrial nasties. The game looks beautiful with all those new backgrounds and spaceship barrelling past, and enemies put up one heck of a fight, too. If you're thinking that Star Fox is just for kids, you couldn't be more mistaken.

  He's on my tail!

  So what's new? Plenty, as it happens. Alongside all those pretty new graphics, the whole thing is in dazzling 3D, and it couldn't be a better fit. It's much easier to judge trips through some of the denser deep space sections now, as the space junk flying around practically pops out of the screen, while seeing an enemy boss open fire as laser bolts whizz straight towards you is an experience you won't forget in a hurry.

  Elsewhere, there are gyroscopic controls, which allow you to steer your craft by moving the 3DS around. It's a nice idea, but we found it much easier to stick with the 3DS' excellent circle pad. One thing we couldn't get enough of, meanwhile, is the four-player multiplayer, which sees you and up to three friends dogfighting it out for Star Fox supremacy across a range of different arenas. It's brilliant fun, and it's enhanced by the fact that the 3DS' own camera is recording an image of everyone's face as they play. In other words, you can see your mate wince as you shoot him out of the sky.

  Best of all, multiplayer supports Download Play, meaning that you only need one copy of the game between four players to enjoy it. It's a shame, though, that you can't take your dog-fighting online to compete with the very best in the world.

  That's small space potatoes where this game is concerned though. Star Fox 64 3DS may not have the most memorable name, but it offers a space adventure you simply won't forget. Fox McCloud and his crew aren't as famous as Mario or Link or Donkey Kong just yet, but this is still one of the greatest games that the Japanese legend ever produced - and with the 3DS' secret sauce, it's looking better than it ever has before.

• Star Fox 64 3D hits stores this week

  Nintendo 3DS owners have been reminded that Star Fox 3D is winging its way into UK stores this week.

  The new handheld remake of the classic Nintendo 64 title - released in Europe as Lylat Wars - sees Fox McCloud and his team of anthropomorphic hotshot pilots take to the skies to liberate the Lylat System from the clutches of the evil Andross.

  For its Nintendo 3DS debut, the acclaimed on-rails space shooter has received a complete visual overhaul, boasting stunning graphics and 3D effects, as well as a new gyroscope-based control option.

  It also introduces a refurbished multiplayer mode that up to four players can enjoy using only one game card, allowing them to compete in fast-paced aerial dogfights.

  This mode also utilises the Nintendo 3DS' inner camera, meaning players will be able to see the faces and reactions of their competitors as they blast them out of the sky.

  Star Fox 64 3D is the first of a number of big-name 3DS games due to hit stores before the end of 2011, with Super Mario 3D and Mario Kart 7 also coming soon.

• Dead Island shambles to top of UK charts

  Zombie survival experience Dead Island has shuffled its way straight to the top of the UK all-formats chart.

  Techland's eagerly awaited first-person action game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC was able to overcome last week's leader Deus Ex: Human Revolution, no doubt thanks to the buzz created by its stunning debut trailer earlier this year.

  It was a strong week for new releases overall in the official GfK-ChartTrack rankings, with THQ's new sci-fi shooter Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine stomping into second place.

  Third spot went to the holdover Driver: San Francisco, while fourth place was taken by another debutant, the PlayStation 3 exclusive FPS Resistance 3.

  Meanwhile, there was also a top ten entry for Star Fox 3D, with the Nintendo 3DS remake of the classic Nintendo 64 title coming ninth.

  Next week's new releases include an eclectic mix of titles, such as the quirky Kinect game The Gunstringer and God of War Collection: Volume II on PlayStation 3.

• New colour and features coming for Nintendo 3DS

  Nintendo has announced that a new colour and a host of extra features are on the way for its high-tech Nintendo 3DS handheld console.

  To celebrate one million 3DS sales in Europe, the gaming giant will be releasing a metallic red version of the next-generation portable console on September 30th 2011.

  This will be followed in November by the introduction of a system update that adds 3D video recording functionality, allowing users to create their own short 3D movies that can be viewed without any special glasses.

  Meanwhile, fans of the console's in-built StreetPass challenges will find that a range of new content is also set to be added.

  Nintendo 3DS has experienced a boost in popularity in recent months, thanks to the recent price cut and the launch of top titles such as Star Fox 3D.

  The console's software library will be bolstered further in the lead-up to Christmas with the launch of the eagerly awaited Super Mario 3D Land in November, followed by Mario Kart 7 in December.
