SPORE for PC

The next evolution in gaming is upon us. From the mind of Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, comes SPORE for PC, an epic journey that takes you from the origin and evolution of life through the development of civilisation and technology and eventually all the way into the deepest reaches of outer space.

Begin your odyssey in SPORE for PC at the dawn of life as a simple microbe just trying to survive, then use the fun, intuitive Editors to evolve the creature from its microscopic origins into an intelligent, tool-using race. Guide your SPORE species as it builds (and the player designs) villages, buildings, cities, and vehicles. Along the way to becoming a global civilisation you can choose whether to hunt or forage, attack or trade, be nice or play rough!

All the action in SPORE for PC takes place in a huge, lush world populated with creatures evolved by other players and shared over SPORE's central servers. When it's ready, your one-time pond scum launches into space in its UFO on a grand voyage of discovery, planet forming, or destruction! As you explore and play in the limitless universe of SPORE for PC's unique worlds, your personal Sporepedia tracks all the creatures you've met and places you've visited.

SPORE for PC Features:

  • Take complete control of your creature's fate: SPORE for PC sees you guide your creation through the following six evolutionary phases:

  • Tidepool phase: Fight with other creatures and consume them to adjust the form and abilities of your creature. In this phase of SPORE for PC it's survival of the fittest at the most microscopic level.
  • Creature phase: Venture onto dry land and help your SPORE creature learn and evolve with forays away from your safe haven. Carnivore or Herbivore? Social or Independent? In SPORE for PC, the choice is yours.
  • Tribal phase: Instead of controlling an individual creature, you are now caring for an entire tribe of your genetic craftwork. Give them tools and guide their interactions as you slowly upgrade their state of existence.
  • City phase: Bring your SPORE creatures' race into a new golden era by building up the technology, architecture, and infrastructure of their city.
  • Civilisation phase: Once your city is established, your SPORE creatures begin seeking out and interacting with other cultures. In SPORE for PC you can have them do so with an olive branch or a war cry - either way, the goal for your creatures is to unify the planet!
  • Space phase: The time has come to move on to other worlds in your solar system. SPORE for PC's Space Phase sees you make first-contact, colonise, or terraform, then venture further to find other solar systems scattered throughout a magnificently rendered galaxy. A 'mission' structure provides new goals and paths to follow as you begin to spread through the whole SPORE universe!
  • A suite of flexible, intuitive creation tools leverages the creative imagination of the player in SPORE for PC. Creating an entire universe of creatures, plants, buildings, vehicles and planets has never been so easy or so fun!:
    • An infinite variety of design choices: You can make literally anything in SPORE for PC!
    • Massively Multiplayer: The world of SPORE for PC is populated with creatures, plants, buildings and vehicles developed by other SPORE players and downloaded from a central database. The server chooses creatures and civilisations that best match your chosen environment, your experience level, and your creature's ability. In turn, your own SPORE for PC creatures are uploaded to the server to be shared with other gamers!
    • Procedural SPORE animation: In SPORE for PC your creatures and vehicles move based on how you construct them. They behave and interact based on your input and by their in-game encounters. That means that in SPORE for PC there's no pre-determined path you must follow - the game evolves based on your decisions.
    • Sporepedia!: Wonder what another gamer was thinking when they created and evolved a creature? Uncover information about each creature's origin in SPORE for PC's Sporepedia, yet another way to explore the truly endless universe of creative expression that is SPORE.
  • Darwin's choice

From the man who brought you SimCity and The Sims comes the game originally known as 'Sim Everything'. Which is a handy clue to the sheer dizzying scope of this evolution-in-a-box strategy masterpiece by Will Wright. It's sometimes hard to even settle on what kind of game Spore is. Or even if it is a game.

It's about this: controlling an alien creature's first swim around the primordial pool, then coaxing it on towards land, sky, space and eventually mastery of the universe.

The ambition is awesome. But it pays off. Yes, Spore is unashamedly six very distinct games glued together as one (while two or three of those are more akin to tutorials). Yet the sum is so much greater than the parts.

    Larger than life

Massively single-player? That means your in-game universe teems with a Cambrian explosion of creatures designed by fellow Spore users worldwide. sentient snowmen, giant whack-a-mole tables, walking chairs, solid snake - these and thousands more unholy freaks trot onto your screen, fight, mate, become your favourites, your friends, your enemies. Already there are more creations out there than real-life species on Earth. It's astonishing.

Already there are more creations out there than real-life species on Earth. It's astonishing.

It's a wonder that the combined swollen brain of planet Earth, leaking ingenuity and imagination and humour all over your monitor, doesn't overshadow the game itself. But Will Wright knows his stuff. Even the simple opening Cell stage - gobble up small things, swim for your life from big things - has been crafted with an irresistible appeal.

It's when you move to the RTS stages of Tribal (small-scale diplomacy) and Civilization (large-scale inter-city conquest) that Spore really grabs you. The Creature Creator becomes a limitless Vehicle and Building creator too. You now attack and ally with all kinds of quirky tribes and there's a tangible sense of depth and balance. It's easy to pick up too. There's no need to have a head full of Command & Conquer to play Spore.

    Animal attraction

You'll form genuine affection for your creature in the early stages, and you'll genuinely love and despise your new allies and enemies later on. Whether they be flying unicorns or a tribe of Incredible Hulks. This emotional kick is only strengthened by Spore's timeline feature: a diary of your creature's progress that you'll browse nostalgically as though it were a High School Yearbook.

Then you take the giant leap into space. In truth, the outer beyond (that Will Wright so spectacularly first demonstrated back in 2005) is a little daunting.

You'll genuinely love and despise your new allies and enemies, be they flying unicorns or a tribe of Incredible Hulks.

It's a truly absorbing strategic mix of trade, ecosystems, terraforming, mining, extra-planetary dogfights, alien abduction and steaming in with your preposterous anti-matter missiles before erasing from history the civilisations you dislike. Though it's hard to begin with, you're encouraged by the sheer bewildering size of the galaxy to explore and regularly sent crying back home by unfriendly and unforgiving new alien races.

    Across the universe

But give it time, and space becomes the glorious blossoming of everything Spore is about. The game's charmed and enthralled you with its ever-widening lens... now, it pulls back to a solar system, to a cluster of stars, to a cloud of stars, to a galactic arm, to the entire galaxy.

And remember, just a few hours before, you were fighting for life among a puddle of microbes.

    GAME's Verdict
    plus points
    • Early stages expertly school you in the many facets of the game.
    • The incredible Creature Creator, just one aspect of Spore's wealth of customisation and sharing.
    • Endless variety and near-limitless potential.
    minus points
    • The Space stage can be overwhelming. But then it is an entire galaxy.
    • No autosave. Save regularly or you'll revert to your own personal 'tribal stage' if something goes wrong.
    • Maxis' own creatures are weak compared to the community-generated ones.

  • According to Eurogamer, Maxis will be revealing a brand new Spore game at next week's Comic-Con in San Diego.

The website got the scoop after sifting through the comic book convention's speaker sessions programme, which announced: "Video Game Reveal: Maxis Studio - Maxis Studio (The Sims and Spore video games) has just announced their next project, a brand new, Sci-Fi Action-RPG based on the DNA of Spore." It goes on to add, "Join key leads from the dev team, Thomas Vu, Paul Sottosanti and Lauren McHugh, for the first game reveal to the public!"

This isn't the first time the game has been mentioned. Earlier this year, Electronic Arts told its investors to expect a new game in the series, and registered a website URL named ?darkspore.com?, but the fact that the team is making a fully-fledged action RPG is pretty exciting stuff.

Spore was released for the PC and Mac in 2008, and allows you to chart the entire evolution of an alien being, taking it from the primeval ooze and into outer-space. It's ambitious and brilliant stuff.

  • If you liked making weirdo creatures in EA's ambitious life simulator Spore, but wished there was - well - a little bit more drama involved in the game, good news: the publisher's just slapped a 29th March release date on Darkspore, the latest PC follow-up - and it seems like it's going to be much more of an action game.

Darkspore is an interesting blend of genres. It uses the creature tools and quirky art design of the original Spore, but thrusts players into an ambitious action RPG. You'll choose a team of monsters, gather loot, bash up enemies and explore huge environments, and there will be all manner of levelling and multiplayer options to enjoy along the way.

If you like juggling a handful of characters, each with their own unique attacks, and hunting around in large alien environments until you've checked out every last nook and cranny, this is the game for you, we reckon. Throw in a bit of four-player co-op, and Darkspore's looking like a very exciting prospect for any and all PC gamers out there.
