Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 puts you in the shoes – and the ghilliesuit – of Captain Cody 'Sandman' Anderson, ex-Delta Force Sniper, now working as a 'Private Security Consultant'. Raised in the tradition of patriotism and service to his country, his story is told in three acts – a mission in the present, taking out nuclear-armed terrorists in the Philippenes, a flashback to the past and his time in war-torn Sarajevo hunting down the war criminal Vladic, and a gripping conclusion in the mountains of Tibet. Offering a similar fun tone to a Hollywood action B-movie, learn just how these missions are connected. What is so important about Sandman's past?

This story is wrapped around some of the most authentic sniper gameplay seen so far. The world of Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 is one that is very much based on the real-world, with authentic locations and environments brought to life thanks to the CryENGINE 3. This is a visually stunning world, one filled with dense jungle foliage, gritty urban environments and blinding snowscapes.

A realistic world needs an arsenal of faithfully recreated weapons. Your six sniper rifles are joined by assault rifles heavy machine guns and more. Authentic ballistics take into account everything from location and distance from your target to wind speed and direction, and even elements like gravity and your breathing rate. pushing this even further is a new mechanic that takes into account how hard you squeeze the trigger, and the affect this has on the shot and recoil of your rifle.

Realistic sniper tactics come to the fore, too. Not only will you work with your spotter to get the job done, stealth is also key, with an on-screen map showing your enemies' location and field of vision, adding even more tension to an already intense experience. If you are spotted, upgrades to enemy AI mean that your enemies will react according to the circumstances they see you. Single foes will take to cover, small groups call for back-up, and larger groups will flank and advance in an attempt to take you out.

The gameplay of Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 goes even further, taking in every aspect of your mission as you take out multiple targets across your locations. The varied urban, jungle, mountain and trundra environments each present new and exciting challenges, mixing up stealth with action, and with new vehicle sections. Your equipment offers new gameplay options, too, using  night-vision goggles and binoculars to locate and even tag your targets when visibility is limited.

With silent kills a must – you don't need your targets screaming and alerting the world to your presence – Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 rewards skillful snipes with brutal kill animations to show just how your hard work has paid off. A new bullet cam shows the most successfully executed kills, following the bullet's trajectory in slow motion from rifle to target. You can push your skills even further with more difficulty choices. Choose to customise elements like gravity, weights and balances and more, or dare to try the Extreme difficulty level where all assists are removed and elements like wind speed and direction have much more impact.

But it's not just about the campaign. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 features new multiplayer modes designed for sniper-vs-sniper duels where you prove just how skilled you really are. Miss a shot or even move too quickly and your opponent's radar will 'hear' where you are, so you really have to be sure you have the shot! Plus, earn badges in the campaign to unlock extra weapons for multiplayer!

• Namco bringing Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 and Combat Wings to Europe

  Namco Bandai has revealed that it will be responsible for bringing City Interactive's Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 and Combat Wings to Europe in the coming weeks and months.

  Up first is Combat Wings, which will hit PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC this month and recreates World War II's greatest aerial battles in a highly authentic gaming experience.

  Offering PlayStation Move support on PlayStation 3, the game features a wide variety of real-life aircraft to control, plus advanced flight physics, multiplayer options and arcade-style accessibility.

  Shooter sequel Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 will follow during the second quarter of 2012 and promises to build on the success of the original Sniper: Ghost Warrior, which proved a surprise success back in 2010.

  The new PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC release features advanced visuals powered by CryEngine 3 graphics technology, making its sharp-shooting gameplay more immersive than ever.

  There's absolutely nothing wrong with good, clean trashy fun. Sometimes - actually, often-times - you don't want a side-ordering of philosophy with your action. You just want to shoot things in the face, and you want to look cool doing it.

  So there's something quite refreshing about the lack of pretentiousness to Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, City Interactive's follow-up to its improbably successful shooter of a couple of years back. The original was a game that was critically panned, but it fared much, much better when it hit the shelves, shifting several million and going on to become one of the fastest growing new brands this generation. Turns out the critics sometimes don't know so much after all.

  

  Bullet to the head

  Regardless, it's hard to ignore the fact that, while it may have been fun, the original Sniper Ghost Warrior was a comprehensive mess, its low-budget nature getting the better of it in a series of glitches and an underwhelming aesthetic.

  City Interactive's spent the money it earned from the original wisely, it seems, investing in the same engine that powered the phenomenal looking Crysis 2 for its sequel. It's an investment that immediately works - Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 isn't the prettiest game out there, but it's certainly earned the right to call itself handsome, boasting some lush green jungles to shimmy through as well as a nice line in destroyed city-scapes - two locales that the Crysis engine has already show to be more than capable of handling.

  When it comes to story - if that's the kind of thing that tickles your fancy - rest assured that Sniper Ghost Warrior 2's plot-line is fittingly cheesy, with you cast in the generic size 10s of Cole 'Sandman' Anderson, a sniper who was raised by Native Americans and has a keen sense of the wilderness.

  

  Loud, Quiet, Loud

  All of which is the perfect frame for Sniper Ghost Warrior 2's own blend of schlocky action, delivered with a knowing wink as well a handful of slippery offal. You are, as you've probably guessed by this point, a sniper, and there's a firm emphasis on the business of ranged kills.

  Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 takes great pleasure in the stickier side of such wet work, rewarding a well-executed shot by having the camera slow and follow a bullet's journey from the end of the barrel to the chosen target, where it typically makes a sickening yet satisfying mess. With the right gun in your hand limbs can be torn off, but there's just as much fun to be had with the standard weaponry when sending foot soldiers pirouetting across the scenery.

  It's not all noise and blood, though. For the sequel there's a new emphasis on stealth, and it's one that's served well by a mini-map - the kind you've seen in the likes of Metal Gear Solid - as well as a handful of neat mechanics. Find yourself having to run to cover, for example, and you'll have to catch your breath before you can steady yourself for an accurate scoped shot.

  It's dumb, then, but never short of fun, and its acknowledgement of the mindless hedonism that's at the core of many military shooters makes it a more engaging proposition than most. It's not a rip-roaring blockbuster by any stretch of the imagination, but more of a straight-to-video guilty pleasure, and for that it's got a certain charm that's entirely its own.

• Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 takes aim at March release date

  Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, the sequel to the surprise 2010 FPS hit, finally has a firm release date in its crosshairs and it's not too far off. March 12th is the date in question, when the game will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The original game was a staggered release, and only reached the PS3 at the end of April 2011.

  In the follow-up, you'll take control of Cole Anderson, a private military contractor, as he engages in conflicts in the war torn streets of Sarajevo, the jungles of Burma and the mountains of Tibet. As with the first game, those sniper shots will be complicated by realistic bullet physics that mean you must take wind and gravity into account when pulling the trigger.

  Ghost Warrior 2 is once again developed by City Interactive, though this time out the developer is ditching its own Chrome 4 engine in favour of CryEngine 3, which also powers the upcoming AAA benchmark shooter Crysis 3. Namco Bandai has stepped in to publish the game in Europe.

  That date again - Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 is out for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC from March 12th.

• Sniper Elite 3 takes aim at 2014 release

  Following the success of last year's Sniper Elite V2, British developer Rebellion is polishing its scope in preparation for a third entry in the wartime headshot extravaganza.

  Sniper Elite 3 will launch in 2014 for both current and next generation consoles, published by 505 Games. More details will be released soon, but it will definitely retain the World War 2 setting of its predecessors. According to a statement made by Rebellion to Eurogamer, the title "features a completely new story and atmospheric World War 2 setting, and a greater focus on sandbox-style sniper gameplay."

  The original Sniper Elite came out way back in 2005 and quickly gained a cult fanbase with its tense one-shot style of play. Those fans had to wait seven years for another squeeze of the trigger, though their patience was rewarded. Sniper Elite V2 was a remake-slash-sequel that enhanced everything good about the original. It also added a gruesome x-ray kill-cam that showed the passage of your bullets through enemies in surgical detail. Nice.

  Sniper Elite is no longer alone in the long-distance sniping genre. Rival franchise Sniper Ghost Warrior came out of nowhere in 2010 and gets its first sequel this week.

  Sniper Elite 3 will be out next year on all formats. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 is out this Friday for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
