Skylanders won't be getting a movie or TV spin-off

With big games such as Assassin's Creed and Need for Speed making the leap to the big screen in the next few years, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the best-selling Skylanders series would be a no-brainer for the movie treatment.

Well, don't go calling Pixar just yet. Activision has said that not only does it not have any current plans to adapt Skylanders for film or television, it's actually dead set against the idea because it just doesn't see the need.

"In terms of a TV show or a movie, no there are not any plans," John Coyne, VP of Activision's consumer marketing, has told trade magazine MCV. "We believe the game is the entertainment. You talk to kids who are real fans of the franchise, and they will be able to tell you Gill Grunt's powers, backstory, what his friends are and generally what's going on in the world of Skylanders. The same sort of things that they are able to articulate around a TV show or a movie."

Joshua Taub, vice president of Activision's business division, went on to make it even more clear. "The video game is the movie," he says.

Certainly, the series has become hugely popular without any help from Hollywood, with the collectible figures outselling brands like WWE in toy shops around the world. The next entry in the saga, Skylanders: SwapForce, is out later this year.
