Classic Singstar makes a comeback...
With the recent Singstar releases all having very strong themes, I have sang-a-long with Disney, thanked Abba for the music, and battled the boybands. It was about time a new Singstar game was released with a varying list of song titles, one that would have something for everyone, and along came SingStar Vol.3, just in time for Christmas!
What's more, having always played Singstar on the PS2, I was keen to try out a PS3 version and see how it compared.
Taking the mic
The gameplay remains the same as all Singstar titles, you can choose 1/2/multiplayer, you can sing a solo/duet/battle, and if you've got a big group of people you can 'pass the mic' with 2 teams of up to 4, which means everyone gets to join in – great for the party season or family get-togethers.
There is a range of songs from classics, e.g. Lionel Richie and 'All Night Long', to recent hits like Timbaland ft. OneRepublic – 'Apologize'.
You then pick a song, sing your heart and you are scored on how well you do it. Each line of the song pops up on the screen with bubbles for each note and the words underneath, and the bubbles are relative to the length of the note and the pitch (in the way the original artist sang). It therefore helps to sing the song like the original artist, which, although it doesn't provide you with much freedom to sing in your own way, it does show you how to sing the song as it originally was, and is a great teaching tool. You can see on screen when you miss notes, and whether you are too high or low, and you soon learn how to adapt your voice and sing correctly – it is a great way to improve your singing.
The variety of songs on Singstar Volume.3 is great. Michael Jackson is included for the first time with his hit 'Billie Jean', and there is a range of other songs from classics, e.g. Lionel Richie and 'All Night Long', to recent hits like Coldplay - 'Viva La Vida' and Timbaland ft. OneRepublic – 'Apologize'.
They also all vary in difficulty, which helps when you have a range of singing abilities playing the game. My boyfriend certainly stretched the higher side of his voice screeching out Apologize's high note – 'It's too laaaaaaaaaaaaattttee' (It was not good!) Where as I learnt that I am no Freddy Mercury, struggling to keep up with the syllable split in Killer Queen – 'Just like mar-ie an-toin-ette'. I soon caught on though, after one run through you can pick up some of the words and timing, which helps!, and build up to scoring like a 'Hit Artist'.
SingStore
There are 2 things in my mind that make the PS3 version differ to the PS2 versions. The first is the graphics, which would obviously be a lot better - and they are. It has no real effect to the gameplay or your enjoyment of the game, but the videos are a lot better quality.
The second is the Singstore, which is the PS3 online shop that allows you to download songs from a much greater selection, for just 99p each. It is especially good if you've got a couple of songs that you particularly love that haven't yet been included on a Singstar game. The list is always growing, there are currently only a few hundred, but in the long run it makes the possibilities with Singstar endless, and definitely means that no one can get out of singing because they 'can't find a song they like'!!
GAME's Verdict
- Another great choice of songs, there’s something for everyone!
- Helps you see your mistakes and improve your singing.
- The Singstore feature is definitely a bonus for the PS3 version.
- There’s little creative freedom - you pretty much have to sing like the original artist.
- Can be tough on the ears (Men + high notes don’t go!).
- Keeps you wanting more! There are always more songs to sing!
