Ridge Racer is Back... Unbounded!

'Ridge Racer™ Unbounded™' Gears Up to Carve its Own Destructive Path on a Spectacular Collision Course with PlayStation®3, Xbox 360® and PC

Ridge Racer is on its way back into the eager hands of gamers. Ridge Racer™ Unbounded™ is coming to add an unexpected dimension to the series and deliver an original blast of ferocious racing adrenaline.

Ridge Racer Unbounded on PS3 Features:

  • Break free from convention with a new mantra – Drive, Destroy, Dominate
  • New breed of racing machines: Traditional racing machines are out, badass street machines are in.
  • The city is your playground: become the king of Shatter Bay!
  • Seminal driving game series Ridge Racer will be available on Sony's beefy handheld PlayStation Vita, due for launch later this year, and it's being developed by a development studio that doesn't make games.

Confused? Cellius, the studio in question, was set up as a joint venture by Sony and Namco Bandai not to create games but to explore the possibilities of the PlayStation 3 Cell processor. he concept was to be an outfit that researched ways to use this technology to create neat things vice president Hideo Teramoto told Gamasutra this week. t not exactly pure research; it more about finding ways to expand the things that can be done with the PlayStation family./p>

And apparently one of the things that can be done is to cram arcade perfect racing simulation into a handheld console. The choice of studio isn't as strange as it might sound though Teramoto is a Ridge Racer veteran, having worked on the series before moving to Cellius.

He describes their new title as ort of an experimentbut insists that Cellius' unique hardware focus will keep their games distinctive. "If we do continue making games, I think wel still remain different from normal game companies" he says. Sounds like this new game could be quite different from current PS3 hit, Ridge Racer 7.

  • Namco's legendary driving game gets an aggressive makeover next year with Ridge Racer Unbounded, which swaps the crisp racing lines of the past for a more rough and ready shunt-and-smash approach similar to rivals such as Burnout Paradise and Split/Second.

But that's not all. Ridge Racer has a trick up its exhaust pipe, in the shape of City Creator. This tool will not only let players design their own tracks but decorate them with buildings. Pah! Who needs buildings in a racing game, right? Well, when these buildings become part of the gameplay and can be driven over, under and through, it's a lot more interesting than it first sounds. Smashing through walls, crashing through windows and sending other racers into a hellish corkscrew of metal and fire. Yep, that sounds OK by us.

Ridge Racer Unbounded will make its hands-on debut at the Gamescom trade show next week. It'll screech into shops in 2012 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

  • Namco Bandai has revealed that some of the biggest stars of the electronic and dance music scenes will be contributing to the soundtrack of Ridge Racer Unbounded.

Grammy award-winning dubstep producer Skrillex, US electronica duo The Crystal Method and drum and bass act Noisia & The Upbeats will all be providing tracks for the new Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 racing game.

Other contributors include established musicians like Scratch Perverts, Unknown Error and Overseer, while a few up-and-coming acts such as RuN RiOT and Ever Never will also be featured.

Additionally, the game's soundtrack will pay homage to the series' heritage through a number of compositions from long-time Ridge Racer music man Hiroshi Okubo, including songs from previous games and a selection of brand new themes.

Ridge Racer Unbounded launches later this month and introduces a new focus on environmental and vehicular destruction, as well as an in-depth City Creator editing tool.
