It's finally here. One of the best games of 2013 – and the last console generation – hits PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this week. The visuals have been polished to a glittering shine, you can play the whole game in first-person perspective and there's a generous scoop of all-new gameplay content as well. But does the enhanced version of Grand Theft Auto 5 justify another purchase?

“This is the definitive version of GTA V, and the bar by which all other open-world games, or indeed any game that aims for a cinematic feel, should be judged,” declares Gamespot in a 9/10 review. “It is beautiful, and thought-provoking, and thrilling throughout. Even if you've played through GTA V once already, it's worth going back just to be reminded of what an outstanding achievement it is.”

“There's a reason that people have been modding first-person modes into various versions of Grand Theft Auto for years,” says Kotaku. “I did not, however, anticipate that an integrated FPS mode would be this cool, or that it would reshape my conception of Grand Theft Auto.” In case you were in any doubt, the article's headline is simply “Yes, You Should Play The New Version Of GTA V”.

God is a Geek is even more impressed, dishing out a 10/10 perfect score. “Anyone concerned that this was just another money-spinning “definitive edition” can rest easy,” it says. “As ever, Rockstar don’t do things by halves, and Grand Theft Auto V on PS4 feels truly next-gen.”

And there are top marks from the Metro newspaper as well. “Many people already consider GTA V to be the best video gamer ever made, but wherever you stand on that issue this is most certainly the best version of the game,” concludes its review.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is out now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It comes to PC in January.
