Two of PlayStation 3's most famous mascots are returning for a multiplayer-oriented new adventure with the announcement of Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One.
Developer Insomniac Games has unveiled the newest entry in the popular platform action series at this year's Gamescom, revealing that it will be the first in the series to support four-player cooperative gameplay.
The game's storyline sees the heroic Ratchet and Clank being forced into an uneasy alliance with Dr Nefarious and Captain Quark, creating a comically dysfunctional four-man team which must work together to accomplish various tasks.
Insomniac studio director Chad Dezern told the official PlayStation blog that he hopes the new game will make it easy for friends and family members to get together and enjoy the adventure, either in the same room or across the internet.
He added: "We feel like the game we want to make lines up perfectly with the game our fans want to see - the time is right for Ratchet co-op!"
The most recent Ratchet & Clank title was the time-hopping Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, which came out last year.

New Ratchet & Clank dated
According to Eurogamer, Ratchet & Clank All 4 One has been given a European street date of 19th October. That a Wednesday which is weird so wee currently checking to see whether the game will actually be out on Friday, 21st October instead.
Either way, wee excited. If youe a platforming fan with a PlayStation 3, the release of a new Ratchet & Clank game is about as exciting as things can get. This one promises to be the most interesting and exciting yet. Why? Because of four-player co-op, that why!
That drop-in and drop-out co-op, too, and it available either online or locally. Beyond that, you can expect the same cute characters, crazy weapons, and brilliant action set-pieces the series has always been famous for.
We couldn be more thrilled about this one. With Uncharted 3: Drake Deception getting ready to reinvent action-adventure games when it released on 4th November, and now Ratchet & Clank promising over-the-top combat, the PS3 is where it at for anybody who likes running, jumping and shooting. And that all of us, right?
Ratchet & Clank All 4 One and Uncharted 3: Drake Deception are both PlayStation 3 exclusives.

PlayStation 3 owners will be able to experience some of the greatest moments of the Ratchet & Clank series with the May 2012 launch of the Ratchet & Clank Trilogy pack.
Part of the growing Classic HD range, the compilation title will include the original PlayStation 2 titles Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet & Clank: Locked & Loaded and Ratchet & Clank 3, all remastered with high-definition visuals.
Developer Idol Minds has worked closely with series creator Insomniac to produce the spruced-up games, all of which have also had PlayStation Trophy support and stereoscopic 3D options added in.
Meanwhile, Ratchet & Clank 3 will make the transition with its acclaimed online multiplayer mode fully intact.
Combining tricky platforming and clever guns and gadgets with a cast of loveable and hilarious characters, the Ratchet & Clank series is marking its tenth anniversary this year.
Its most recent instalment was last year's Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, which introduced a four-player cooperative mode for the first time.

Most movies based on video games have taken their inspiration from high-kicking fighting games or grisly horror franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but now it looks like someone has finally worked out that there are some games that would be perfect as CG animated family flicks.
Case in point: Ratchet & Clank, which will be coming to cinemas in 2015 according to an announcement from creator Insomniac Games. The movie is in production now at Rainmaker Studios, which released the similarly sci-fi themed family animation Escape from Planet Earth earlier this year.
Unlike other video game movies, this one actually sounds like it stands a good chance of staying true to the games we love. Insomniac's lead writer, TJ Fixman, is penning the script while voice actors James A. Taylor, David Kaye and Jim Ward will all return to play Ratchet, Clank and Qwark.
The Ratchet & Clank games have been among the most popular PlayStation exclusives ever since they launched in 2002. You can pick up the first three titles in the Ratchet & Clank Trilogy collection, while more recent entries in the series include four-player co-op game Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One and the platformer tower defence hybrid Ratchet & Clank: QForce.
The comedy duo join the likes of Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell and Need For Speed, all of which are the subject of major blockbuster movies due in the next few years.
