Players will take control of anti-hero Alex Mercer, who wakes up in a mysterious laboratory as an experiment with no memory of his past. The world of Prototype is engulfed in a three-way conflict between the military, a mutated viral epidemic, and Mercer -- who has become a weapon in his own right. The whole game is built around the idea of weaponizing yourself. Mercer can absorb his enemies, taking on their memories and appearance.
You are a shape shifter - the Prototype. Consume and become anyone; hide in plain sight as a normal human and mix and match genetic traits to create incredible never-before-seen deadly biological weapons. Consume people and gain their skills, knowledge and personality. Fight a secret war against a conspiracy out to capture or kill you; defeat it before it threatens the survival of New York itself.
Prototype Features:
- Deadly Shape-Shifting Action - Alex Mercer is a shape-shifter with amazing powers of combat, destruction and deception.
- A Fresh Take on a Stale Genre - Taking the open-world genre to breathtaking new heights, PROTOTYPE is an original IP featuring Alex Mercer, an all-new anti-hero framed within a conspiracy-drenched storyline that gives open-world/action games a fresh and well deserved kick in the pants.
- 'Deceive or Destroy' Gameplay - PROTOTYPE's 'Deceive or Destroy' gameplay allows players the choice to either blend in with the crowded population and covertly progress through the story, or fully unleash Alex's powers, moving through New York City as a walking slaughterhouse - shape-shifting in plain sight, consuming civilians on the street, commandeering military vehicles, including Apache helicopters and Abrams tanks and causing destruction at every turn.
- Unprecedented Locomotion and Agility - Being more than human, nothing in PROTOTYPE's bustling New York City setting is an obstacle for Alex. Players will vault over hundreds of cars, run vertically up the sides of skyscrapers, scale huge distances in single jumps and more.
- New York City Hunting Ground - PROTOTYPE's open-world playground is New York City done right! The city is jam-packed with thousands of pedestrians, hundreds of cars and is truly a bustling, thriving representation of the world's most famous city.
- Developer Pedigree - No stranger to the open-world game development space, Radical Entertainment is the developer behind PROTOTYPE, and touts a wide catalog of successful titles, including the highly acclaimed The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Simpsons Hit & Run and Scarface: The World is Yours.

Rise of the Anti-Hero
Sandbox games are extremely popular with GTA, Saints Row 2, Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 being among the most successful. When made well these games can really pull the player in, engrossing them in a rich story whilst giving them the freedom to take some time out to explore the environment.
You don't have to play nice
When you add super powers to the mix then you know you’re in for a treat. This combination has been done to varying degrees of success with Spiderman 3, Spiderman: Friend or Foe and Crackdown being the top dogs in the superhero/sandbox combination. But this is all superhero stuff. What if you’re the “the bad guy”, or at least act like it?
Prototype is centred on anti-hero Alex Mercer, who wakes up in a military facility with no memory. Mercer has been part of a military experiment which has given him special abilities. Determined to get to the bottom of his memory loss, Mercer steps on to the streets of New York and smack bang into the middle of an already raging war between the Military and a mysterious viral epidemic.
Mercer can slice, slash and club his way through New York
Even thought this is a “superhero” game it’s nice to see that Mercer doesn’t wear the traditional Superhero clobber, instead Mercer favours some comfy jeans, shirt and jacket. Maybe he heard that Lycra and Leather costumes chaff?!
As a result of the experiments performed on him, Mercer has the ability to use his body as a lethal weapon. By altering his hands into a variety of different looks, Mercer can slice, slash and club his way through New York. Each of these ’weapons’ has its own strengths and weaknesses. The combat is extremely fluid and easy to pull off, but despite its ease the combat looks great. Using Mercers claws, you can either slice your enemies or charge up the special move which sees Mercer slam his claws into the ground, to then explode out of the ground obliterating anything (soldiers, mutants, pedestrians and vehicles) in his way.
Another ability that Mercer has is to absorb memories and skills of those he kills whilst slicing and smashing his way to the truth. This is where Prototype really excels above the previous superhero/free roam titles. As you can expand your arsenal of destruction, above your already formidable powers to incorporate tanks, helicopters and guns. As you kill and absorb certain fodder, you absorb the abilities they hold. So absorbing a pilot will enable you to fly a helicopter.
The combat is extremely fluid and easy to pull off, but despite its ease the combat looks great
Close combat is not the only method of inflicting some pain. As you absorb skills you will also be able to get your hands on guns. Not just little pea shooters either. Heavy duty machine guns and rocket launchers can be added to your arsenal when you find the right person to kill. This opens up a whole new way to go on the offensive and also allows you to play as you like as you run, gun, slice and dice your way through New York’s streets.
Good to be bad!
The free running element of Prototype works amazingly well; it’s smooth and effortless. Little ledges on roofs don’t need to be jumped as Mercer will automatically step higher and use it as a launching pad to start a jump. This applies to cars and debris in the streets. You can easily move from running up a wall, to gliding, back to roof top to then leap to the ground to deliver a devastating attack on those below.
Prototype ticks all the right boxes with effortless yet devastating combat, smooth free running and gorgeous and very gory looks. Prototype has come out of no where, and it is shape-shifting up to be something special, and not a bit of Lycra in sight. Thankfully.

No memories, No mercy!
Free running games are possible my favourite genre, with my top picks being Saints Row 2, Fallout 3, Sacred 2, inFamous and the brilliant Crackdown. These particular titles top my list for a variety of reasons from the vast landscapes you can explore to the Co-op fun that can be had. New to the free roam arena is [Prototype]. First impressions of [Prototype] were positive, it offered freedom, a gripping story and superpowers.
[Prototype] brings you an edgy story that raises questions from the start, for example, why do you wake up in a morgue with no memory and two guys in Hazmat suits preparing to open you up? Knowing that something is very wrong you leave the morgue determined to piece your past together. But Alex is no normal person; he has been infected with a virus that enables him to shape shift his body into a variety of lethal weapons that can slice, crush and dismember all that get in his way. This turns out to be a private army, a ton of mutants and most of the population of New York City. [Prototype] doesn’t waste time lulling you into the game, it throws you. Head first.
The combat in [Prototype] is very smooth and easy to get to grips with and players will be slicing and dicing in no time. As you progress through [Prototype] you will open up new abilities and moves each with their own pros and cons. It’s down to you to decide what ability suits certain situations. But fighting isn’t always the answer to achieving your objective.
[Prototype] doesn’t waste time lulling you into the game, it throws you. Head first.
Nothing wrong with hiding
Stealth is sometimes required to access certain areas or people. The best way to hide in [Prototype] is to step into someone else’s skin, literally. By “consuming” people or military personnel, you can then shape shift into the unfortunate soul you have just killed. “Consuming” is violent and blood soaked affair, as you pummel and tear your victim, to then watch them disappear into your body.
“Consuming” plays a bigger role than just hiding from the military though. Throughout the city are key figures that you will need to “consume” to gain access to their memories and new abilities. The memories you see will either point you to the next mission or reveal more about your mysterious past.
The abilities you can unlock vary from upgrades to your already formidable shape shifting powers to being able to drive tanks and helicopters. This gives [Prototype] a diverse range of attacking and defending possibilities.
[Prototype] is a gore filled, revenge fuelled, free roaming adventure
Your fight to recover your lost past takes place in New York, which to begin with looks clean and undisturbed. But as you progress through [Prototype] the city starts to look more war torn and dilapidated which really adds to the feel of the dark and twisting plot in [Prototype]. Moving around New York is fun and exceptionally easy, and hours can be lost just by running around jumping and gliding from roof to street back up to roof again in one fluid movement.
If you want to relax and just have fun there are side missions to keep you busy for a while. As you complete story missions and side missions, you will earn Experience Points (XP) to improve your repertoire for death and destruction.
Born to be bad
[Prototype] has been nurtured lovingly from concept to finished product and it really shows. New York looks fantastic, the combat is slick (with blood) and movement is swift and effortless. [Prototype] is a gore filled, revenge fuelled, free roaming adventure that deserves centre stage in your game collection, as being bad has never been so good!
GAME's Verdict
- The ease at which you move around the City.
- Fluid brutal combat.
- A great story that pulls you to it's conclusion.
- Sometimes you can feel overwhelmed by enemies.
- Co-op could have been a good addition.
- Not sure if it will be supported by DLC.

Teaser site hints at Prototype 2?
With the Video Game Awards getting closer - the event will be happening on the 11th December - we're getting all manner of interesting rumours regarding games that will be unveiled. Now Activision is joining the ranks of BioWare and EA (looks like we could get early notice on Mass Effect 3 and a new SSX), with a website called Murder Your Maker.
So what's it about? The website's pretty inconclusive, with a single photo of a bald man checking out a wall filled with newspaper cuttings and photographs. Internet sleuths are going to town on it, though, and the common consensus seems to be we could be in for a Prototype sequel.
That's good news. Prototype is the brilliant open-world superhero game released in June 2009 which tells the story of mutant Alex Mercer, who has all manner of crazy, and slightly disgusting, powers. He's been turned into a monster, doesn't have much in the way of hair, and would be just the kind of person to track down whoever made him the way he is.
If you're a fan of running up the sides of buildings, punching tanks until they explode, and stealing other peoples' identities for stealth sequences, Prototype 2 should be exactly what you're after. If you want to see what the fuss is about, the original is available now for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.

Video Games Awards reveal games, games, and more games
This weekend saw the Video Game Awards rock the US of A, and while there were prizes, speeches, and parties, there were also announcements of new games. Lots of them. Here are the biggies.
Mass Effect 3 is on the way from BioWare. The sci-fi sequel will see Commander Shepherd protecting the Earth from alien invasion, and will be hitting the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 somewhere around Christmas 2011. We love the first two games, so we're excited.
Sticking with RPGs, Bethesda's unveiled Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the sequel to sword and sorcery classic Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It's coming out in November, 2011, but we've got no firm word on which platforms it's going to land on just yet, or what kind of epic fantasy story it's going to tell.
Hellboy director Guillermo Del Toro's working on a game for THQ called inSane. Aside from the fact that it's out in 2013, that's literally all we know about it from the reveal.
Prototype 2 is on the way from Radical and Activision. The sequel to the superhero open-worlder features an interesting twist: rather than pick up the story of wall-crawling mutant Alex Mercer once more, you're cast as the man who has to bring him down. No platforms have been revealed, but the game's on the way in 2012.
Finally, we knew it was in development, but now we also know Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception will be hitting PS3s in America on 1st November, 2011. Whether Europe gets it the same day we don't yet know, but it's nice to know roughly when to expect it.
But it wasn't only action and role-playing fans who have things to look forward to following this weekend's Video Games Awards in the US. Sports gamers are getting a few treats, too, with new instalments for the SSX and Forza series being announced.
SSX: Deadly Descents reinvents the classic snowboarding game for the current console generation, although no formats - or dates were revealed.
According to the publisher, EA, players will explore the story of a team who seek to be the first to descend the faces of the most treacherous mountain ranges on the planet. The team will travel the world to face the worst that Mother Nature can throw at them. From the peaks of the Himalayas, where the air is so thin that riders have to descend through the death zone at breakneck speeds to keep from blacking out, to the solid ice ranges of Antarctica, where a sunlit line is the only survival option when temperatures drop 50 degrees centigrade in the shade.
Sounds great. If you're a driving fanatic, though, you'll be excited to hear about Forza 4. The latest game in Microsoft's simulation racing series will be revving up on the Xbox 360 in the second half of next year, and although details are scarce, you can expect some kind of tie-in with Top Gear, apparently, and some Kinect integration to boot.

1 year agoAmazingReally good game, I bought it years ago and played it start to finish without taking a break haha! sold it back in thinking id never play it again untill prototype 2 came out! trying to get my hands on another copy because the story line was EPIC but easy to get confused if you arent following it well, I've forgot it but id buy it again before I play the second game which ive already bought!
1 year agoWOW - ProtoypeIve bought this now twice, why did I take it back? well, I thought i'd never play once I completed it but I was wrong. Fantastic game mechanics, great visual style and immersive story-line. This game is not for the faint-hearted, as you free-run your way through a city being infected by its inhabitants you can cause as much carnage as the enemy, with a somewhat godly feel to the character and his mutations. Absolutely a must get, must buy game. If your planning on getting the next Prototype in the series I would recommend getting this first especially at this price.
