The Plot Thickens…
Taking place a year after the events of the film Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, Prof Layton receives a letter from Sharon Redoll requesting his assistance in the city of Montdol. The fictional city is being terrorised by the Gentleman of Miracles, who has also prophesised the cities destruction due to the power of the mask that he wears.

At the Cities 18th Anniversary celebration, the Gentleman of Miracles appears and sends the crowds fleeing into the night after turning some to stone. Layton and Luke give chase but the mysterious Gentleman of Miracles disappears, thus Professor Layton and Luke’ next adventure begins.

Professor Layton games are known for their puzzles, with 150 fresh and fiendish 3D puzzles Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracles is no different.

Thanks to the Nintendo 3DS’ Spotpass feature, you’ll be able to download an additional 365 puzzles, that means Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask features a whopping 515 3D puzzles!

Like previous Professor Layton titles, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask mysterious story will be told through beautifully animated cut scenes, but now they’re in 3D!

Battle the 'Masked Gentleman', an utter rotter who's turning citizens of Monte d'Or into rock and unravel his dastardly plan by solving 150 puzzles that cover the whole gamut of gaming from mindbenders to minigames. And then pile through 365 more puzzles, one for every day of the year! Generous doesn't even begin to cover it...

  The world's most adventurous academic is back to face-off against another dastardly villain in Professor Layton And The Miracle Mask. But this time it's all in fancy-pants 3D on the Nintendo's flagship handheld, the 3DS.

  The Layton series has always been about the story, characters and scenarios framing its fiendish puzzle action, and this fifth instalment in the series is no different. According to legend, whoever wears the titular Miracle Mask is bestowed with great power. And unfortunately, it hasn't ended up strapped to the face of, say, a dear old lollipop lady but on the noggin of a distinctly ungentlemanly 'Masked Gentleman'. He's been turning the citizens of the Vegas-like town of Monte d'Or into stone and wreaking havoc. So enter Professor Layton to bring the crazed cad down a peg or three.

  

  Fans of the series will spot the difference from previous entries in an instant - the 2D artistry of old titles were obviously deemed too '2010' and the gameplay is now rendered in cel-shaded 3D graphics and effects. Fret not though; it doesn't mean Professor Layton has been turned into an FPS, charging you with running down a street clutching a deadly weapon, laying waste to mutants.

  No, the gameplay remains mercifully the same, the 3D merely adding depth to the locations and puzzles. And talking of puzzles, this latest instalment features 150 of them, made up of all manner of brainteasers; you'll match patterns, play word games, solve maths mindbenders and much more plus partake in many a mini-game including, erm, shelf-stacking. Believe us, that's much better than it actually sounds. No, really.

  And once you've shown the Masked Gentleman the exit, you can pile through a further 365 puzzles - one for every day of the year. Fans of the series then can take solace in the fact that this is the best Layton in eons and that the 3D is no mere gimmick or distraction but a blast of fresh air. And as for newcomers? Well, you're in for 515 brain-stretching treats...

• "Final adventure" for Professor Layton announced for 3DS

  Time may be running out for Professor Layton, that puzzle-loving sleuth who has enchanted gamers on an annual basis since 2007. In a Japanese press presentation, developer Level 5 has announced it's working on another game in the series due for release on Nintendo 3DS next year.

  Going by the rather unwieldy literal Japanese title of Professor Layton and the Legacy of Super Civilisation A, the plot for this game, the sixth in the series, apparently kicks off when someone contacts the professor claiming to have found a living mummy. Fans will be saddened to learn that the title, which will boast lots of new puzzles, is being described as "the final adventure" for the top-hatted hero.

  Worry not, however, as the lengthy translation process means we've still got the Prof's fifth outing to look forward to. Just as Japan was revealing its plans for his final outing, Nintendo's European operation confirmed it'll be launching Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle in UK shops on October 26th, also for Nintendo 3DS.
