The Plot Thickens…

We're spoilt for choice when it comes to gaming that fits comfortably in the palms of our hands; not only has the Nintendo 3DS found its feet in 2012, but we also welcomed in the powerhouse that is the SONY PlayStation Vita in the same year. So if you've picked up either from GAME (or even both!), then here's our list of 2012's best games for each handheld...

Gravity Rush on PlayStation Vita at GAME

    Gravity Rush (PS Vita)
Poke the laws of gravity in both eyes with this fab third-person action game that puts you in control of Kat, a girl whose ability to defy gravity would have given Isaac Newton an aneurysm to go with his apple. Couple our heroine's awesome aerial acrobatic skills with an open-world and an intriguing sci-fi plot and you've got yourself a pint-sized classic. Sequel please!

Professor Layton & The Miracle Mask on 3DS at GAME

Professor Layton & The Miracle Mask (3DS)
The charm of Professor Layton series touches down on to Nintendo's finest with wonderful cel-shaded 3D graphics and effects. Battle the 'Masked Gentleman', an utter rotter who's turning citizens of Monte d'Or into rock and unravel his dastardly plan by solving 150 puzzles that cover the whole gamut of gaming from mindbenders to minigames. And then pile through 365 more puzzles, one for every day of the year! Generous doesn't even begin to cover it...

Resident Evil: Revelations for 3DS at GAME

    Resident Evil: Revelations (3DS)
Fancy a rest from screenfuls of rainbow colours and Nintendo mascots? Then get back to the bleakness with this RE title that packs in all the tension and scares of the survival horror series with some fantastic multiplayer action too. The best in the series since Resident Evil 4.

LittleBigPlanet for PlayStation Vita at GAME

LittleBigPlanet (PS Vita) - packed with pucker platforming, this handheld version of the SONY juggernaut is a perfect conversion plus the ability to create and play user-generated levels means endless replay value too.

    Honourable Mention

New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) - it's Mario ergo it's essential. Do we need to say more?

Professor Layton And The Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS at GAME

The world's most adventurous academic is back to face-off against another dastardly villain in Professor Layton And The Miracle Mask. But this time it's all in fancy-pants 3D on the Nintendo's flagship handheld, the 3DS.

The Layton series has always been about the story, characters and scenarios framing its fiendish puzzle action, and this fifth instalment in the series is no different. According to legend, whoever wears the titular Miracle Mask is bestowed with great power. And unfortunately, it hasn't ended up strapped to the face of, say, a dear old lollipop lady but on the noggin of a distinctly ungentlemanly 'Masked Gentleman'. He's been turning the citizens of the Vegas-like town of Monte d'Or into stone and wreaking havoc. So enter Professor Layton to bring the crazed cad down a peg or three.

Professor Layton And The Miracle Mask on Nintendo 3DS at GAME

Fans of the series will spot the difference from previous entries in an instant - the 2D artistry of old titles were obviously deemed too '2010' and the gameplay is now rendered in cel-shaded 3D graphics and effects. Fret not though; it doesn't mean Professor Layton has been turned into an FPS, charging you with running down a street clutching a deadly weapon, laying waste to mutants.

No, the gameplay remains mercifully the same, the 3D merely adding depth to the locations and puzzles. And talking of puzzles, this latest instalment features 150 of them, made up of all manner of brainteasers; you'll match patterns, play word games, solve maths mindbenders and much more plus partake in many a mini-game including, erm, shelf-stacking. Believe us, that's much better than it actually sounds. No, really.

And once you've shown the Masked Gentleman the exit, you can pile through a further 365 puzzles - one for every day of the year. Fans of the series then can take solace in the fact that this is the best Layton in eons and that the 3D is no mere gimmick or distraction but a blast of fresh air. And as for newcomers? Well, you're in for 515 brain-stretching treats...

  • Time may be running out for Professor Layton, that puzzle-loving sleuth who has enchanted gamers on an annual basis since 2007. In a Japanese press presentation, developer Level 5 has announced it's working on another game in the series due for release on Nintendo 3DS next year.

Going by the rather unwieldy literal Japanese title of Professor Layton and the Legacy of Super Civilisation A, the plot for this game, the sixth in the series, apparently kicks off when someone contacts the professor claiming to have found a living mummy. Fans will be saddened to learn that the title, which will boast lots of new puzzles, is being described as "the final adventure" for the top-hatted hero.

Worry not, however, as the lengthy translation process means we've still got the Prof's fifth outing to look forward to. Just as Japan was revealing its plans for his final outing, Nintendo's European operation confirmed it'll be launching Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle in UK shops on October 26th, also for Nintendo 3DS.

Extremely Pleased With a Layton 3DS Game
An amazing 3DS mystery game with a gripping story, a magnitude of puzzles and characters with more personality and back story than most other new releases to date. My full review at: http://gaming364.blogspot.co.uk/

Layton in the 3D
If you played Layton games and you liked them, this one will be the best of all of them. 3D is unbelievable, puzzles are good (for me a bit easy) and sound as always perfect. I can only recommend for all 3DS owners.

Miracle Mask - Miracle of a Game!
Another spectacular and very addictive game from the Professor Layton series; they never fail to please. I enjoyed the whole gaming experience and with newly introduced features with the 3DS platform layout, it is greatly improved so that you really engage in the story. Brilliant artwork that can be viewed in 2D or 3D is also fantastic! The characters have personalities that you can fall in love with and the puzzles are challenging, but fun! I was upset to finish the game (I always am). For any who will buy this game or any others in the Professor Layton series, I hope you have many hours of enjoyment! Rating-Infinite stars out of 5 :) Best game I've ever played!
