Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 Product Details

Released on 23/10/2009

Pro Evolution Soccer is a video game built on pride, the pride that comes from making the most realistic soccer experience one can have within the world of gaming. Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 does not disappoint and this year, the voices of fans world-wide have been heard. Based in Japan, Winning Eleven Productions has instituted a host of anticipated changes that make PES 2010 the best yet.

In PES 2010 you'll find yourself on the largest stage in digital soccer: The Champions League. Imagine you're in a 1-1 tie in stoppage time against Manchester United. You've broken their defense and are sprinting full throttle into a man to man match of wits and reflexes with Edwin van der Sar... Do you have what it takes to punch it in for the win?

PES 2010 Features:

  • Introducing Transcendent Visuals - PES will offer drastic improvements in license content, stadium atmospheres, player likenesses all the way down to the specific moves of the real life players. When you play as Messi, it will be like Messi is playing.
  • Evolution of Intelligence - PES will draw upon the real life excitement of soccer which relies heavily on intelligent defenses and offensive schemes. The AI is redone and will feature Teamvision 2.0 for a more formidable opponent. It will also help your offense to build attacks or to close down your opponents attacks. Gamers will be able to execute orchestrated attacks and defenses which involve multiple players at the same time.
  • The Power of Choice - In addition to the UEFA Champions League mode, players will have more choices than ever. They can choose any of the modes including an enhanced Master League mode enabling players to create and manage their team for a longer period of time. In addition there will be multiple cups to play for and an edit mode to further personify your team.
  • Online Reinvented - A new dedicated section of the PES production team is committed to improving the online side of PES 2010. More downloadable content is also planned. Konami has supported PES 2009 with the release of new licensed teams, transfer updates, etc, and this support will grow for PES 2010. Team and content updates are planned throughout the game’s lifespan. These will make the game even more bespoke to the player’s match day needs.

  • Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer has achieved a social media milestone after racking up an impressive five million "Likes" on Facebook.

To celebrate the occasion, PES cover athlete and official spokesperson Cristiano Ronaldo has recorded a special message to the game's five million online fans.

Gamers who go to the page and view the video will even be able to enter a special competition to win one of five football shirts signed by the Portugal and Real Madrid superstar.

Ronaldo became the official face of the PES series for its most recent instalment, the popular PES 2012, which was released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii and PSP last year.

The game introduced a number of innovative new features to the classic formula, including improved AI and off-the-ball player control, as well as a wide variety of modes and options.

It has since also been released in an enhanced handheld edition on Nintendo 3DS.

  • PES and move...

If you peruse the gaming pile of most UK based gamers, chances are you'll spy at least one of the major footballing behemoths. We're all football crazy after all. Even football mad, some might say. The king of the latter years has undoubtedly been EA's FIFA series, replacing the once essential Pro Evolution Soccer brand for our footie based addictions.

It's a game of two halves

One of the biggest plus points for this year’s iteration of the long running football series is the inclusion of the official Champions League license. Settle down in front of your console and you can settle into the whole experience, from the same classic tunes, through to a proper representation of that famous trophy. PES 2010 might lack the real names of all the clubs and players – though it does pack in a fair few – but for Champions League addicts, this little option is a real treat.

If you're looking for constant goal mouth action, then PES 2010 offers it up by the truck load.

While FIFA 10 remains the absolute best overall football title available on a modern console, that's not to say that PES 2010 wont find its suitors. The action on the pitch is much faster than EA's offering, and a whole heap of fun when you find a pair of you huddled around a single console. If you're looking for constant goal mouth action, then PES 2010 offers it up by the truck load. Shooting in particular has a much more varied feel than FIFA, and some spectacular goals will be seen right from the off.

Single player gamers are well catered for too with a vastly improved Master League. This option allows you to either control your favorite team, or create your very own club complete with recognisable 'Master League players' you'll remember from years gone by, and take them to glory over a number of seasons. This time around you can even pick and choose the sponsorship that adorns the front of your shirt. So there won't be any embarrassing huge yellow and red sploges like what was plastered across the shirts of Sheffield Wednesday in the form of 'Chupa-Chups'.

He must be sick as a parrot!

Praise has to be levelled towards the sheer accuracy of some of the major stars of the footballing world. A large number of the best football players throughout the world look almost unnervingly accurate to their real life counterpart, with the likes of Torres, Gerrard, and John Terry in particular appearing almost identical. Even Gary Neville has that sort of 'tache that he refuses to remove.

PES 2010 might not be the best overall football game out there – that crown is still sat atop FIFA 10's glowing head – but it certainly does a heck of a job at offering a fun packed representation of the worlds favourite sport. If you're looking for a fast paced, more arcadey representation of our second favourite pastime, then this is the one to plump for.

    GAME's Verdict
    plus points
    • Player likenesses for the most famous players are top notch.
    • You can play the official Champions League.
    • Great fun for two gamers on one machine.
    minus points
    • Players running looks a bit awkward.
    • Opponent AI isn't quite top notch.
    • Online options can be a bit laggy.

First things first: the online play appears to have been fixed! I've played about five games and each was fine; even a red connection played only slightly stuttery and much better than a green connection on PES 2009 and 2008. I think FIFA is great this year but PES gives you so much more immediate control over the players, e.g. the players pass it as soon as you press X rather than taking an annoying extra touch and getting tackled like in FIFA. Overall, a big improvement, especially if you like playing online.

This is a great game. Its not perfect but it has fantastic gameplay, graphics and player likenesses. So what if the teams and licenses aren't there? You can easily get an update file that sorts most of that out. Trust me this is better than FIFA, the football is far more entertaining, tactical and frustrating at the same time, multiplayer is the business. FIFAs beauty again is only skin deep. They have even sorted out the lag, I have had numerous online games without any issues. 9.5 out of 10, only cos they haven't got all the teams/stadiums etc but they probably never will as EA knows that as soon as they give up their exclusive license deals PES will kick there ass good and proper.
