The PS3 Slim gets slimmer and slicker!

The redesigned new smaller, lighter PlayStation 3 packs all the gaming fun you’d expect from PlayStation but in a brand new case!

By redesigning the internal design architecture and removing the disc-fed tray for a sliding top-loading disk cover, the PS3 Super Slim is reduced in size by up to 25% compared to the current Slim PS3.

Packing 12GB of internal Flash Memory, you'll have plenty of space to save games so you can continue where you left off! But if you find space getting tight, then you can always upgrade the Hard Drive size later on.

You’ll still be able to play all your favourite PlayStation 3 titles such as Uncharted 3 Drakes Deception, God of War 3 and Gran Turismo 5, not to mention some of the upcoming titles like Assassins Creed III, Need for Speed Most Wanted and PlayStation All Star Battle Royale.

The PS3 Slim 12GB is more than a games console; it’s a home entertainment system that allows you to play Blu-Ray Discs, DVD’s, Music CD’s and watch TV through the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 iPlayers*.

The sleek new look will go with any household set up and thanks to the PS3 Slim stand (sold separately) you can lay the console down or have it stood up, depending on the space you have!

    Most people try and shed a few pounds after Christmas, but Sony has only gone and cut down the already slim PlayStation 3 in preparation for the festive season.

    At 2.1kg the new model weighs less than half of what the original - and now rather chunky-looking - PlayStation 3 did. It's even lighter by a quarter than the current slim model. Part of the reason its able to shed so much weight is because it now has a top-loading sliding disc compartment rather than the current automated slot system.

    The announcement was made as the Tokyo Games Show kicked off in Japan, but the good news is we won't have to wait very long for the benefits to reach our shores. The new console will be available in two distinct models and the first, which comes with a hefty 500Gb hard drive, will be on sale in Europe from September 28th. That's next week, for those without a calendar.

    A cheaper alternative, with 12Gb of internal storage, will launch a few weeks later on October 12th. For those who buy that model but decide they need more space, a standalone external 250Gb hard drive will also go on sale, as well as a vertical stand for those who like their consoles perpendicular.

    Various games will also be bundled with the console, including Assassin's Creed III and the upcoming interactive Move title, Wonderbook: Book of Spells. There'll be a FIFA 13 bundle as well, exclusive to GAME.

    Coinciding with the new console is a range of budget PlayStation 3 games under the Essentials banner. Uncharted, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, God of War III, Assassin's Creed and Far Cry 2 are among the titles you'll be able to pick up for less than twenty quid.

    Clearly, Sony is hoping to lure away a few potential Wii U customers. Which will you pick for your winter gaming needs?

Hi, can anyone help me, i bought this console for my son not realising the problems that many are aware of regarding the small memory it holds, people mention buying a larger HDD and caddy, my question is "what are these and where do i get them," thanks in advance :)

nothing from your flash memory gets deleted! when you pop you new drive in, it simply transfers everything onto it!

You can buy officially licensed HDDs for the PS3 from many online retailers, but you'll struggle to purchase them in a store. You can get a 250GB HDD with mounting bracket included for £64.99, this size should be fine; 500GB is probably excessive. thanks, i have utubed how to change the memory and it seems pretty simple, do i just order a 500gb hard drive and caddy and then insert it and download it? has anyone else done this? sorry to sound silly but i am not that well informed, again tia :)

Game sizes
For anyone wondering, a blu-ray based game install will optionally install from 0Gb, to approx 9GB to speed up load times; the higher end is rare though, such as MGS4 or Gran Turismo 5. Most games are much smaller, maybe 2GB. Note that you may also need to download game patches, or DLC (downloadable content) such as extra levels, expansions etc, which will also take up space. If you purchase a game from PSN Store, it could be larger though, since you won't have the blu-ray to hold most of the data. If you're thinking of buying a lot of games, consider that you'll need to add a large HDD relatively soon, or buy the slightly older HDD based PS3 Slim; alternatively, PS4 will probably be out late 2013 if you can wait, but will be much more expensive. The consoles great, the only thing that lets it down is the disk drive. I liked the slot loading one but apart from that its great, can't believe they've packed all that in to a smaller chassis,

Very disappointing
I purchased this console after my original PS3 finally stopped functioning. Like others I upgraded this console very easily by purchasing a PS3 HDD caddy (not yet availabel from game, I believe) and installing my old 320gb HDD. Simples! However, the console itself I have had several issues prior to installing my old HDD (I had to wait over a week before my HDD caddy arrived). When loading, it is loud, very loud. Unlike previous models, this being a top loader, when the disc spins around for loading it sounds like a tornado resulting in the just about the same amount of noise. It is, very, very annoying especially when you yourself get in-tune with it! Playing COD online or watching the movie loading scenes involves turning up the volume higher and higher. Fifa can also being annoying at times. The main issue I had was that games started to freeze when playing. It also froze when trying to login to the PSN store. I tried returning the item within the first 7 days of purchase for a refund, but Game would only offer a like for like swap after testing it. I have heard several bad stories about Game concerning their testing, so I brought it back home and after three hard resets the freezing problem no longer seems to be an issue. In fairness to Sony in order to lower the cost of the console they have used cheaper parts and it shows. I regret buying this version of the console. It has been more hassle than what it is worth. My suggestion, try and buy the old PS3 slim if you can. This console is just a poor relative.
