Nothing is as it seems in Nier. Assume the role of the unyielding titular protagonist, Nier, in his quest to discover a cure for his daughter who is infected with the Black Scrawl virus. With powerful allies and a mysterious book, Nier encounters things that will confound even the mightiest of warriors.

Combining an immersive world, rich storyline and dynamic visuals, Nier challenges you to tackle dark and mysterious enemies through action-packed swordplay and stylish magic spells.

Features:

  • Experience a rich storyline set in an immersive world plagued by human anguish, buried secrets and a ravaging disease
  • Face-off against evil creatures and unleash brutal combat moves along with devastating combo attacks and powerful magic spells
  • Travel across a beautifully rendered open world with dynamic landscapes featuring the remains of modern society
  • A father's love

Set in a crumbling world plagued by sickness and evil, players take on the role of protagonist Nier in the latest fantasy action Role Playing Game from Final fantasy publisher Square Enix.

As with most RPG's, Nier's story is the driving force behind your progress. At its outset, Nier's daughter is infected with a mysterious disease known as the Black Scrawl virus, so you set out on a bloody quest to discover a cure. Nier is an adult game from the start and - be warned - features lots of strong language.

    Multiple identities

Borrowing from some of gaming's finest examples, Nier is essentially a number of titles rolled into one. Its main quest is a Zelda-like dungeon crawler which sees you roaming grassy fields and navigating labyrinth environments, battling enemies along the way and gaining new abilities at a welcome pace.

Plays with expectations then shifts to another gameplay style entirely, from 3D hack and slash to platforming, Survival Horror to puzzle-packed RPG.

Meanwhile, Nier's third-person real-time action of the God of War variety sees you wielding mighty weapons to create combos, and blocking or evading enemy attacks as you do battle, while the magic attacks bring to mind Bayonetta. It has to be said that the visuals aren't as accomplished as those two top-tier titles, but the art style, with its distinctly anime take on the swords n sorcery setting, is refreshingly different to anything we've seen on HD consoles.

Nier, then, is a difficult one to categorise; refusing to stick to a set path, shifting camera angles and visual style to give you varying perspectives, paying homage to 2D side-scrollers and even arcade shooters along the way.

    Genre twisting

This approach can surprise and frustrate in equal measures, meaning that Nier never really makes one gameplay style its own and masters it, preferring instead to play with expectations and then shift to another gameplay style entirely, from 3D hack and slash to platforming, Survival Horror to puzzle-packed RPG. That said, there are a few epic boss battles that you'll remember for some time.

The main story moves along at a brisk pace, but progress is slowed if you choose to explore the game world and the towns and villages it has to offer. Here you'll come across sidequests, most of which involve fetching items or killing something for cash.

Some thrilling boss fights, well realised puzzles, and the story is strong enough to make you want to play to the game's conclusion.

Considering almost all of the best goodies in Nier are freely obtainable, it has to be said that the rewards don't really match the effort you'll have to put in to get them. Having said that, if you like Nier's fast, flowing hack-n-slash combat then the sidequests, coupled with traditional RPG elements like fishing and seed-growing, only add to the longevity of a game which is already some way less expensive than the majority of new releases.

Jack of all trades, master of none

The main downside of Nier, then, is that - excluding its excellent soundtrack - you couldn't say it has its own standout element or signature moment. There are some thrilling boss fights, well realised puzzles, and the story is strong enough to make you want to play to the game's conclusion, but it's still one for the type of player who has perhaps gotten bored with games that are easily categorised, and maybe wants to try something different.

So, on one hand Nier is a quirky take on the RPG genre with enough variety to appeal to a wide range of players, but it lacks the polish and strong sense of identity that you'd expect from a real must-have release. It definitely packs together an interesting blend of gameplay styles however, and even if it doesn't fuse them flawlessly, Nier boasts enough imagination and good intentions to make it at least worth a look.

    GAME's Verdict
    plus points
    • Engaging story.
    • Excellent soundtrack.
    • A quirky title that refuses to conform.
    minus points
    • Some pointless side quests.
    • Graphics aren't of a very high standard.
    • Doesn't carve out its own identity strongly enough.

Nier
Nier certainly is not for everyone, it has a very unique approach to gameplay, varying between bullet hell shooter and rpg. It also has unique moments like text adventures and such. Nier story is very emotional, and basically revolves around a father trying to save his daughter from a terrible disease. But as the game goes along, you will find out that nothing is as it seems. The game also has various endings, each of these ending revealing a little more about the world of Nier, providing the player a great incentive to replay the game several times. Backing up the gameplay and storyline is a great soundtrack, one of the best I ever heard in a videogame, the voice work is also top notch. It's a shame that the graphics from a technical standpoint can't really keep up with the rest of the game. But like I said, only from a technical standpoint because the art direction in Nier is very good, giving us some great environments and some nice designs. Like I said, Nier is not for everyone, but those of us who can appreciate the game will most certainly fall in love with it.

You control a character who is trying to cure his sick daughter whilst trying to find this cure he stumbles across a mysterious book and all havok then breaks loose I like this game its story is good, music is freakin awesome 1 of the best soundtracks Ive heard in ages, my top 2 favourite VAs (Voice Actors) Liam O Brian and DC Douglas put their awesome voice talents in the game I just love it. The game also features a mix of platform/adventure/RPG elements in as well

Nier
A wonderful cast of characters let down slightly because the gameplay isn't on the same high level. Still gives you people with actual personallity, resulting in memerable dialogue, instead of cut and paste heroes and villians. A gem of a game, if suffering a few scars

Nier
Nier draws you in with an intriguing story, engaging characters and varied action rpg gameplay. Forget the fact the visuals aren't the best on 360;Final Fantasy XIII has amazing graphics but is an empty experience, besides once you get engrossed in the game you won't notice their shortcomings anyway. There's fast, enjoyable combat, cool boss encounters and dry, dark humour to be found in Nier's memorable allies.Be brave enough to try something unique, look beyond the graphics and enjoy a hidden gem of a game.
