Amid the post-war boom of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Cole Phelps, an LAPD detective is thrown headfirst into a city drowning in its own success. Corruption is rampant, the drug trade is exploding, and murder rates are at an all-time high. In his fight to climb the ranks and do what’s right, Phelps must unravel the truth behind a string of arson attacks, racketeering conspiracies and brutal murders, battling the L.A. underworld and even members of his own department to uncover a secret that could shake the city to its rotten core. Using groundbreaking new animation technology that captures every nuance of an actor’s facial performance in astonishing detail, L.A. Noire is a violent crime thriller that blends breathtaking action with true detective work to deliver an unprecedented interactive experience. Search for clues, chase down suspects and interrogate witnesses as you struggle to find the truth in a city where everyone has something to hide.

  • The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) has named the nominees for this year's GAME British Academy Video Games Award, with Batman: Arkham City and LA Noire leading the pack.

Rocksteady Studios' superhero sequel and Rockstar's hard-boiled detective drama both scooped eight nominations each, including best game, music, design, artistic achievement and story.

Following hot on their heels were Naughty Dog's globetrotting adventure Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Media Molecule's sandbox platform game LittleBigPlanet 2 with six nominations, while Portal 2 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim scored five each.

Meanwhile, a shortlist of ten titles was also revealed for the publicly-voted GAME Award of 2011, the winner of which can be chosen by visitors to the GAME Award website.

Arkham City, Battlefield 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 2012, LA Noire, Minecraft, Portal 2, Skyrim, Uncharted 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword are all in contention to claim the prize.

Those who take part in the vote will also be in with a chance of winning a limited edition Star Wars Xbox 360 console, complete with a Kinect sensor and copy of Kinect Star Wars.

  • A sequel to last year's acclaimed detect-em-up may be in the offing according to a Rockstar spokesperson, but don't expect it any time soon.

"Don't count out the possibility of a new game in the L.A. Noire franchise in the future," was the reply posted on Rockstar's forum after a fan enquired whether we'd be seeing more period detective action. "We simply have not decided anything," continued the post. "We're all very pleased with how that game turned out and are considering what the future may hold for L.A. Noire as a series."

Despite healthy sales and critical acclaim, LA Noire developer Team Bondi flew to pieces shortly after release, amid accusations of unpleasant working conditions. Rockstar owns the series, however, and may decide to continue with a sequel in its own style.

The publisher won't be hurrying a Part 2 onto shelves for the sake of a fast buck, however. "We don't always rush to make sequels, but that does not mean we won't get to them eventually - see Max and Red Dead for evidence of that - we have so many games we want to make and the issue is always one of bandwidth and timing."

Rockstar is certainly busy at the moment. As well as the upcoming Max Payne 3, due in the UK on May 18th, there's also the small matter of Grand Theft Auto V, announced last November. Details on that game are still scarce, but Rockstar plans to start dishing the dirt soon.

"We know that there are a ton of questions you all have about the game, including release date and lots else," is the official line. "Right now, we are very hard at work on the game and are excited as well to show and tell you more as development progresses - expect that we'll be talking much more about GTAV starting at some point in a few months' time."

  • Rockstar has confirmed that its acclaimed detective game LA Noire will be making its PC debut this November.

LA Noire: The Complete Edition will be released both in stores and via the new OnLive cloud gaming service, with the PC release set to include the original game plus all of the subsequent downloadable content in one package.

Every copy of the title will include a multi-use code which can be used to access the additional Nicholson Electroplating, Reefer Madness, The Consul's Car, The Naked City and A Slip of the Tongue cases.

In addition, PC gamers can expect to benefit from enhanced visuals, optimised keyboard controls and optional support for 3D visuals for those with the appropriate hardware.

Debuting on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 earlier this year, LA Noire became one of the year's best-reviewed games, as well as breaking UK sales records for an original title.

The game casts players in the role of an up-and-coming detective in 1950s Los Angeles and utilises cutting-edge facial animation technology to bring its interrogation scenes to life.

  • Publisher Rockstar has revealed that its hotly-anticipated new detective game LA Noire is to make its global debut on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in May 2011.

The long-awaited new project from Team Bondi is an ambitious adventure taking place in the Los Angeles of the late 1940s, placing players in the role of rookie police detective Cole Phelps, portrayed by Mad Men actor Aaron Staton.

As Phelps seeks to solve a series of gruesome murders, gamers will have to tackle challenges that test both their brains and reflexes, with shoot-outs and car chases going hand-in-hand with clue-finding and deduction.

A central component of the experience will be its interrogation scenes, in which players must scrutinise the facial expressions and body language of suspects to determine if they are being honest.

This feature has been made possible via sophisticated performance-capture technology that allows subtle expressions to be conveyed with absolute fidelity.

Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games, said: "LA Noire breaks new ground for us. Its intense blend of action and real detective work defies genre conventions to create a unique and captivating thriller."

Wow
The facial animations alone are enough of a reason to buy this game, luckily the solid gameplay, charming 1940s environment and overall slickness will keep you hooked long after that novelty has weaned.
