  According to Eurogamer, Activision HQ has finally slapped a date on Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. And guess what? Us European types are getting it four days before the US is!

  The latest instalment in the massive rhythm action franchise - apparently, over 40 million Guitar Hero games have been sold so far - will be hitting shelves on 24th September in Blighty, with our friends across the pond waiting until the 28th.

  Warriors of Rock will be the only Guitar Hero game released this year. After a number of decent add ons and off-shoots, it looks like Activision is getting back to its roots with one big stellar game at a time. The latest certainly looks interesting, introducing a lavish story mode for the first time, as a gang of Guitar Heroes set off on an epic quest to save a legendary guitar and slay an enormous beast, and organising its songs into themed playlists, such as a CBGB level which sees you tackling a gaggle of punk songs.

  With over 90 songs on the disk and a brand new guitar, which ditches reality entirely in favour of some bizarre stylings, Warriors of Rock looks to be just what the music doctor ordered. The game will be available for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii.

  Fans of rock, punk and metal may have felt left in the cold by the last few additions to the Guitar Hero series, which featured more Janet Jackson than Judas Priest. For many, Guitar Hero III remains the best addition to the series, with its heady blend of pure guitar-driven rawk. So just in case the subtitle didn't make it clear, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is a return to the hard rockin' roots of the series, which favours Slayer over the Spice Girls.

  Gameplay is immediately familiar to Guitar Hero veterans; the coloured notes scroll down the screen and you have to hit the corresponding coloured button on your plastic instrument of choice when they get to the bottom in time with the music. Said plastic instruments comprise guitar, bass, drums and microphone - for those who have overcome their personal inhibitions and aren't afraid to embarrass themselves when their voice inevitably cracks trying to reach those glass-shatteringly high notes.

  The usual procedure with these games is that you start a band and struggle to the top of the heap over several increasingly difficult set-lists, culminating with your band being crowned Best Band in the Universe Ever. Or something. The problem with this formula is that you have to start again when the next game comes out. So either you're forming a new band, or the entire world has suffered an amnesia inducing knock to the head and they've forgotten all about how awesome your band were in the last game.
  

  "It used to be about the music, man!"

  Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock attempts to shake things up a bit in this respect. So you're not trying to start a band and desperately claw your way out of the local pub circuit. Instead, there's a gloriously ridiculous story involving the Demigod of Rock who has been imprisoned after a titanic battle with The Beast, a soulless automaton (probably piloted by Simon Cowell). Your mission is to rally the titular Warriors of Rock to your cause, form the ultimate band of face-melting shreddiness and defeat The Beast once and for all, freeing the Demigod of Rock in the process.

  Taking centre stage in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock are the Warriors of Rock themselves. Series favourites such as Judy Nails and Axel Steel return alongside some new faces, each with a unique power that will aid you in the final battle. Lars Umlaut, for instance, allows up to a 5x multiplier instead of the usual 4x, while Echo Tesla awards a small amount of Star Power with every 10-note streak. Complete the character's set-list and they'll transform into their warrior form, making their powers more potent.n the final battle, these powers can be combined in any combination you desire as you assemble two separate bands and do battle with The Beast to an apocalyptic trio of Megadeth songs.

  Along the way, you'll find the Demigod of Rock's guitar, and by paying tribute to the spirit of rock by performing Rush's 2112, it will be yours to take with you to the final battle.
  

  "Dude, you guys rock!"

  It all adds up to a refreshing change of pace for the music-game genre and gives you some context and a real goal to work towards rather than simply playing through a series of set-lists and being told that your band is bigger as a result.

  For many, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is an undiluted and unashamed champion of the heavier elements of the rock spectrum, and for that it's more focussed and rewarding than its predecessors. Sure, the story line is difficult to swallow at times and the difficulty needs some fine tuning in places, but all in all the gameplay is as solid as you'd expect from the series and the music selection successfully caters to the core Guitar Hero gamer.

  Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is the strongest Guitar Hero game for some time and is a worthy addition to any living room full of plastic instruments, and a great starting point for any rock fans new to the series.
