Total War: Rome II - Review

Total War: Rome II takes the war to the world as you take control of one of nine nations (the Averni, Carthage, the Iceni, Macedon, Parthia, Pontus, Ptolemaic Egypt, Rome, and the Suebi). This is not the strategy RPG to which you are accustomed. Each nation has a face, a history, and eventually a place in your heart. You'll soon care about the history faces you come across as you pummel their armies and plunder their nations in the era of 272 BC.…

Risen 2: Dark Waters - Review

Risen 2 features the role-playing game conventions players know and love, but replaces the more traditional high-fantasy and post-apocalyptic settings, characters and themes with classic Caribbean pirate ones. A refreshing take on the genre, it offers fairly unique island environments and an engaging story filled with swashbuckling action and battles with sea-dwelling monsters called Titans.…

    Blur - Review

The combination of Mario Kart style weaponry and fully licensed cars to be honest should not work! Its fact, the two just sound silly together. But what the developer Bizarre Creations has done is nothing short of genius.…

    R.U.S.E - Review

From the outside, R.U.S.E. may look like just another World War II strategy game. You harvest resources from nearby supply depots, build up your base, create armies of troops, tanks and aircraft, and march them off to do battle. The truth is, it's anything but.…

    Saints Row IV - Review

Play through Saints Row IV's intro and you could be forgiven for worrying that one of the series' defining characteristics is missing: its humour. What may have been intended as a parody of every militaristic action game ever made ends up a little too close to the mark to prompt laughter, or even a knowing grin. Then, with the launch of a nuclear missile and the arrival of a cheesy '90s rock ballad, you realise Volition hasn't forgotten what has made Saints Row special. And it only gets crazier from there.…

    Far Cry 3 - Review

It's probably quite fitting for a game that's all about man's descent into insanity that Far Cry 3's probably the nuttiest thing you'll play all year. It's a hedonistic mix of guns, sun and madness - as well as a cavalcade of wildlife that takes this above and beyond your normal shooting experience. Here's a game where the balance of a gunfight can be tipped by an errant bear. …

    F.3.A.R. (F.E.A.R 3) - Review

Aside from its preposterous acronym, the biggest problem with F.E.A.R. 3 is that it misrepresents itself. It may be a horror-themed shooter, but if you're expecting scares then you'll be left wholly disappointed. Early on it becomes apparent that the shocks are scripted events and can't actually hurt you, at which point it becomes about as spooky as your neighbour's haunted house. If you've come for frights then look elsewhere, but if you're looking for an exceptional first-person shooter, F.E.A.R. 3 will hit the spot. …

    Bioshock 2 - Review

Let me begin by laying down a rather 'shocking' fact... I have not played the first BioShock! So the first question that I wanted to find an answer for is: do you need to have played the first BioShock in order to enjoy the second one? And that answer is... no. The plot in BioShock 2 doesn't particularly follow on from the first and gives you enough information to understand what is going on.…

    Assassin's Creed III - Review

A friend of mine teaches a history class at a high school. A few years ago he noticed his students were going from C-grade mediocrity to A-grade brilliance almost overnight. He was perplexed, so he asked them what exactly it was that had suddenly made them such experts on, of all people, the Borgias...…

    The Darkness 2 Review

It's been five years since we last encountered The Darkness, but in The Darkness II, out now on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, only two years have passed since the events of the first game. Gangster Jackie Estacado is still playing host to a malevolent demonic entity, but he's managed to keep it under control, despite still mourning the murder of his girlfriend in one of the first game's most dramatic moments. Something as powerful as The Darkness can't be contained forever, though, and when a mysterious organisation known only as The Brotherhood declares war on Jackie, he's forced to release the beast in order to survive.…

    F1 2013 - Review

Ron Howard's newest film, Rush, captures the intensity of Formula One racing and the heated competition between rivals. With this in mind, fans hoping to get a taste of the experience can play Codemasters' F1 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. This fast-paced racer lacks the movie's star power, but makes up for that with high-speed Formula One cars packing 18,000rpm, an electrically powered boost button that delivers an extra 80bhp on demand and plenty of aerodynamic downforce. It's perfectly all right if you don't understand the jargon. Simply keep your thumb on the gas and enjoy the ride.…

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm - Review

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm may be classed as an expansion, but it's also a couple of games in one. DiRT Showdown - Review

Developer Codemasters feels the DiRT racing franchise has "outgrown a single game" over the last few years, hence its recent decision to split the franchise into two different flavours, one of which is a realistic simulation racer and the other a too-cool-for-school arcade one. While the two styles have arguably co-existed perfectly well in previous releases, the studio thought it better that each got more attention going forward.…

Call of Duty: Black Ops II - Review

Is it that time of year already? No, not the annual rush to plaster Christmas all over every shopping centre as soon as the last embers of Bonfire Night have died down, but the traditional November release of a new Call of Duty game. Turning out a new title in a series every twelve months should lead to creative inertia but against the odds, in Black Ops II developer Treyarch has delivered the most invigorated and interesting COD in years.…
