We've long known that Square Enix's massively multiplayer online Final Fantasy sequel is coming to PlayStation 4, but now we know when the game will make the leap to next gen. April 2014 is the date for your diary, according to the publisher.

There will be a PS4 beta trial ahead of time, launching on February 22nd. Not coincidentally that's also when the PlayStation 4 goes on sale in Japan.

Producer Naoki Yoshida has already explained that anyone playing on the PlayStation 3 version of the game will be able to transfer their progress across to the PlayStation 4 version, but that this process means you then can't revert the data to PS3 again.

Final Fantasy XIV is set against the backdrop of a war between the Garlean Empire and the Eorzean Alliance. The Garleans go as far as to drop a moon on their enemies, but the moon turns out to contain the vengeful Primal Bahamut, who proceeds to trash the planet. In desperation, the remains of the Eorzean forces - including you, dear player - are sent five years into the future to try and set things right.
