The next instalment in the acclaimed Dragon Quest franchise has been unveiled and is currently in development for the Wii and Wii U consoles.
At a special press conference in Japan, Square Enix revealed that Dragon Quest X will be an online role-playing game that will be released both on Nintendo's current and next-generation consoles.
It will be the first in the esteemed series to be developed internally by Square Enix and will see players exploring and interacting in a vast online world, with designer Yuji Hori, composer Koichi Sugiyama and character artist Akira Toriyama all on board.
Both versions of the game will be cross-compatible, while connectivity with the Nintendo 3DS handheld is also a planned feature.
Dragon Quest X is provisionally set to make its Japanese debut in 2012, which is also the same year that the Wii U console is expected to launch.
The new game will aim to follow in the footsteps of Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies, which launched on Nintendo DS last year to great acclaim.
