• Deus Ex stays ahead of Driver in charts

  Deus Ex: Human Revolution has managed to extend its lead in the UK all-formats chart for a second week, despite a strong debut for Driver: San Francisco.

  Square Enix's acclaimed sci-fi shooter for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC has maintained its place in the official GfK-ChartTrack rankings a week after its long-awaited debut.

  Driver: San Francisco had to settle for second place in its first week on release, but it was a good performance nevertheless for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii title, which is the first new entry in the popular series for four years.

  Following behind the new Driver was former chart leader Zumba Fitness and sports game Rugby World Cup 2011, while Lego Pirates of the Caribbean came fifth.

  Meanwhile, EA's latest American football title Madden NFL 12 made its debut in sixth place.

  Next week's chart will see the debut of a number of high-profile titles, including zombie action game Dead Island on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, as well as Star Fox 64 3D on Nintendo 3DS.

• Dead Island shambles to top of UK charts

  Zombie survival experience Dead Island has shuffled its way straight to the top of the UK all-formats chart.

  Techland's eagerly awaited first-person action game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC was able to overcome last week's leader Deus Ex: Human Revolution, no doubt thanks to the buzz created by its stunning debut trailer earlier this year.

  It was a strong week for new releases overall in the official GfK-ChartTrack rankings, with THQ's new sci-fi shooter Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine stomping into second place.

  Third spot went to the holdover Driver: San Francisco, while fourth place was taken by another debutant, the PlayStation 3 exclusive FPS Resistance 3.

  Meanwhile, there was also a top ten entry for Star Fox 3D, with the Nintendo 3DS remake of the classic Nintendo 64 title coming ninth.

  Next week's new releases include an eclectic mix of titles, such as the quirky Kinect game The Gunstringer and God of War Collection: Volume II on PlayStation 3.

• Dead Island passes two million sales

  Smash hit zombie survival game Dead Island has shambled past the two million sales mark, publisher Deep Silver has announced.

  Developer Techland's innovative blend of first-person action, RPG customisation and survival horror thrills has proven a big draw among gamers since its debut earlier this month, topping the charts across the US and Europe.

  The UK has been no exception to the game's appeal, with the game having now led the all-formats chart for a fortnight, becoming Deep Silver's biggest-selling British release ever in the process.

  Dead Island has been big news since its debut trailer - an artful, moving film involving a young family succumbing to a zombie onslaught - became an internet sensation earlier this year.

  The finished game appears to be living up to the hype, with players relishing its open-world exploration, intense melee combat and four-player cooperative action.

  Dead Island is available now on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

• Dead Island movie on the way

  Chart-topping, zombie-chopping genre hybrid Dead Island will be making its way to the multiplex, thanks to Hollywood studio Lionsgate, which snapped up the film rights this week.

  The game caught their eye when the teaser trailer went viral. Playing out in reverse, the trailer showed how a young girl at a tropical resort was caught up in a zombie outbreak, infected and then thrown to her death from a hotel window. It is this approach that will inform the film, not the storyline of the game, which followed four bad-ass characters as the carved a path through the undead to escape.

  'This is exactly the type of property we're looking to adapt at Lionsgate', said studio head Joe Drake (no relation to Nathan). 'It's sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.'

  No actors have been signed, but the film will be produced by Sean Daniel, who previously brought us The Mummy franchise. He also played Policeman #2 in Sam Raimi's Darkman, so there you go.

  Dead Island is out now for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

• Dead Island movie rights optioned by Lionsgate

  Lionsgate has announced that it has acquired an option to make a film adaptation of the smash hit zombie survival game Dead Island.

  The movie studio has snapped up the rights to Deep Silver and Techland's Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC title within weeks of its debut, with the game having topped the UK all-formats chart for a fortnight while shifting two million copies worldwide.

  According to Lionsgate's producers, the film will be inspired primarily by the sensational teaser trailer that became a worldwide internet phenomenon earlier this year, before going on to win the prestigious Golden Lion in Cannes at the International Festival of Creativity.

  The emotionally powerful short film, which chronicled the story of a young family's demise at the hands of the undead in a striking non-linear fashion, received more than ten million views online with two days of its debut.

  Lionsgate's Joe Drake said the movie will feature the same focus on emotional stories, relationship drama and fragmented storytelling.

  He added: 'This is exactly the type of property we're looking to adapt at Lionsgate - it's sophisticated, edgy and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love.'

• Dead Island heading back to the beach for a sequel

  Zombie-splatting openworld RPG Dead Island will be lurching back to life, hungry for more brains, as Polish developer Techland has confirmed that it's working on a follow-up, entitled Dead Island: Riptide.

  "The next battle between life and death will be waged in Dead Island Riptide, currently in development for consoles and PC by Techland," read the message posted on the game's official Facebook page. "An extensive reveal of the thrilling new perils that players can expect from this new entry to the Dead Island franchise is planned for later this summer. Stock up on zombie survival guides, water, ammunition, and watch this space!"

  The message was accompanied by a logo, which repeats the palm tree motif of the original over murky forest imagery. Will this sequel be set on the same island, or has the infection spread to a new location? We'll just have to wait and see.

  In the meantime, the BBFC has rated a Dead Island: Game of the Year edition, so if you haven't already hacked your way through the original game, you'll get your chance.
  

• Dead Island developers working on first-person hack and slash action game

  Zombie-themed role-playing adventure Dead Island won over plenty of players with its chunky first-person melee combat, which allowed you to swing machetes, clubs and all sorts of homemade weaponry at the undead. Now, some of the team from Techland, the studio that created Dead Island, are working on a new game with an even greater emphasis on hand-to-hand fighting.

  Given the promising codename Project Hell, the game features a swords and sorcery visual style with concept art on the game's official blog - the wonderfully named sharpenyouraxes.com - showing a menacing looking fellow in armour clutching some monstrous severed heads. Project Hell is being developed with PC in mind, but the developers say they're considering a console release as well.

  "Our main goal is to make a game we can all enjoy playing so don't expect unicorns and fairies," posted project manager Marcin Kruczkiewicz. "We prefer breaking through hordes of undead minions only to slaughter their devilish and loathsome masters in a bloody boss-fight." Charming.

  The main Techland team, meanwhile, is still beavering away on Dead Island sequel, Riptide, due sometime in 2013. A Game of the Year edition of the first game, including all the additional DLC quests and bonus weapons, is out for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

• Dead Island: Riptide reveals its new holiday destination

  Having survived the zombie carnage on the tropical island of Banoi, fans eager for Dead Island sequel Riptide will have a whole new blood-soaked holiday destination, called Palanai, according to creative director Sebastian Reichert.

  "The request from the fans after the success of Dead Island was very clear – they want more and they want it now!" Reichert told VG247. "However, creating a whole new setting will take a lot of time. So the question shifted to ‘do we have enough ideas in the same setting to offer another great experience, or do we have to shift the setting to deliver a full experience?’ Dead Island: Riptide is the answer to that. We changed the setting partially, built in new features fitting to this different environment and now we make sure the experience rocks again."

  "For example, in Dead Island, the beauty of the island was often created by man – the beach resort, hotel, etc - and the terror was created by the zombies. This main design theme has changed. Palanai is an island full of natural beauty, for example, wonderful waterfalls, contrasted by natural destruction caused by storms, monsoons and rain. And of course the zombies."

  Riptide will add a new character to the quartet introduced in the first game, as well as improving various gameplay mechanics. Sticking with melee or ranged weapons, for instance, will gradually increase your stats for that weapon type.

  Dead Island: Riptide is due for release on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 next year. If you want to get up to speed on the series, the Dead Island: Game of the Year edition is on sale now for just £12.99.
