Fans of Assassin's Creed got a fright last August when Ashraf Ismail, director of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, told Eurogamer that the developers had "an idea of where the end is, what the end is". Did this mean that Ubisoft was planning to bring an end to the franchise?

Nope. That's according to Darby McDevitt, writer of both Assassin's Creed Revelations and Black Flag. In a new interview with Edge, he explained that while individual storylines within the series may come to a definitive conclusion, the Assassin's Creed universe is broad enough that new stories can always be told.

"There's been a bit of confusion in that [Ismail] once said that Assassin's Creed has an ending - that's not exactly true," he explained. "This storyline has an ending, but because all of history is open to us we see the universe as a Doctor Who type thing. There are so many possibilities we don't want to definitively end the universe, but we can have storylines that have endings."

McDevitt also admitted that a list of potential settings for Assassin's Creed V hidden in Black Flag's modern day segments was his idea, a spoof "parodying the ones that the fans had asked for". He even hints that because the series is always evolving, there's no way of telling which features will lead to ideas for sequels.

"Nothing ever gets set aside," he explained. "There's often ways to creatively use old technology for new things. One of the things that made AC3's naval combat possible - and then of course AC4 - is that we were able to have characters climb and walk around on dynamically moving objects. This technology, it might appear in future games - it might just not be on boats. It might appear in a completely different way."
