In Pikmin on Nintnedo Wii you control a spaceman called Captain Olimar who has crash-landed on an unusual planet. The planet is inhabited by Pikmin - strange flower-like creatures that are half-animal, half-plant – as well as a variety of hostile creatures who will try and stop you in your mission. Captain Olimar must collect 30 sections of his crashed vessel which have been scattered across the planet to reassemble his ship and continue his galactic quest: luckily the obliging Pikmin are there to help him.

Pik me up!

Designed by legendary Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, the original Pikmin was one of the key titles on Nintendo's GameCube console. It never really received the widescale popularity it deserved however, so Nintendo has picked it up, dusted it off and updated the game as part of its New Play Control! range, which seeks to bring new life to cult classics. And if you've never encountered Pikmin before, it's definitely worth checking it out now and making up for lost time.

Pikmin planet

This being a Miyamoto game, the plot is absolute surreal lunacy. Players take on the role of an astronaut named Olimar who has crash-landed on a strange planet and must find 30 components of his spaceship in order to escape. After a brief look around he discovers that the world is inhabited by friendly plant-like beings called Pikmin who crowd around him and are clearly willing to help find those missing parts.

This is a sort of real-time strategy game, except instead of tanks and soldiers, you're commanding cute little plant men

Unfortunately, the landscape is also filled with plenty of not-so-kindly insectoid beasties, plus a whole bunch of traps and hazards. The Pikmin follow Olimar around as you direct him, and can then be chucked at creatures or other obstacles - when lobbed, they'll automatically get stuck in to a fight, though if you've not planned the attack well (always look for weak spots!), you'll end up with a pile of Pikmin corpses, which is a truly distressing situation. Luckily, when a beast is slain it is taken back to the Pikmin nests - or 'onions' as Olimar calls them - where it's processed to create new Pikmin seeds, thereby bolstering your army.

Attack of the vegetables

Pikmin is a really lovely game. The characters are so cute as they run, trip and fight their way through the world.

Pikmin is a really lovely game. The characters are so cute as they run, trip and fight their way through the world, and the environments are filled with fun details and really weird animals. The utterly adorable sound effects and music just have to be experienced, too. What the new version adds is support for the Wii controller, which can be used to physically point at where you want Olimar and the Pikmin posse to go - sure, it looks like you're conducting a weird orchestra of vegetable fighting men, but it feels really intuitive and allows you to completely concentrate on the delightful world.

Days go by...

The downsides of the original game are still present though. Pikmin has day/night cycles and players only get 30 days to find all the ship parts; each day only lasts for about 15 minutes, so it's over pretty quickly, whether you're successful or not. Also, the fact that there are only three different types of Pikmin means that your tactical arsenal is rather limited. This is fine if you're an inexperienced gamer, but hardcore strategists may find that they're not challenged enough. The good news is, the much more full-bodied Pikmin 2 will also be making a New Play Control! appearance in the near-future.

For now, this is a game you simply must experience - a true Miyamoto oddity that takes a very serious videogame genre and turns it into a loveable knockabout treat. The beauty is, you start to think really strategically without noticing - the cute visuals, noises and creatures make it all seem so simple. Pik it up today.

GAME's Verdict
plus points
  • Lovely characters and sounds
  • Lots to see and explore
  • Well-implemented controls
minus points
  • Not many different Pikmin classes
  • Lacks longevity
  • Day/night cycle is restrictive

This game is fantastic. My five year old son and I have played it non stop since we bought it. Brilliant for developing logic and strategy in the little ones and also exercising your own grey matter. Can't wait for the next version!

Brillant strategy game! Great controls. Cool graphics. The only bad thing is it is too short. Roll on Pikmin 2!

Fantastic game. One of my favs! Not as kiddie as it looks on the cover. If you like strategy games and fed up with all the blood and gore this game is very original and fun to play. For ex-Gamecube players who played it b4 its good to see the new controls with the Wii but its exactly the same as the Gamecube version. PLEASE BRING OUT PIKMIN 3 !!!
