Mark gets one in the Nec[tar]

What happened eh? Created by the Timesplitters team and scripted by bit-bonkers writer Rob 'No reason!' Yescombe (just Youtube the name, all will become clear) our hopes had been high for Haze. Initially, we were promised a triple-A festive stunner of a first-person shooter – even going all the way up to (not-so) sunny Nottingham to preview it last October. And then, after a lengthy delay for 'fine tuning', we were even more hopeful that Haze's May release might bode something special.

Alas, Haze has since launched to a string of underwhelming review scores. It can't be all that bad, can it?

Yes and no. Haze has suffered severe criticism, and a lot of that is deserved; however, there are some good ideas here too, albeit sometimes lost amongst fuzzy execution. It isn't the most cutting-edge or innovative product in the PS3's games catalogue, but Haze has some redeeming features that may make it worth a look if you're a big shooter fan.

There are some good ideas here, albeit sometimes lost amongst fuzzy execution.

Not least is Haze's much-vaunted Nectar. It's not as central to the game as the hype would have you believe, but there's certainly something satisfying about employing a dose with L2 and suddenly going all supersoldier; vision blurring, camouflaged enemies flash up stark orange, and helping you move faster, hit harder and shoot more accurately.

It's a shame, then, that the faction within Haze that uses Nectar, the Mantel Troopers, are so thoroughly crass and dislikeable. They whoop, holler and yell like boozed-up American frat boys, making you want to shoot them almost as much as the Promised Hand Rebels you've been deployed to fight.

Unfortunately, that's often what you'll end up doing, as they amble carelessly into your field of fire and get a bullet to their Nectar pack, causing them to overdose – going crazy and shooting everything in sight (which can happen to you too, if you overdo it on L2). Team mate AI simply isn't up to the level of something like Halo – and nor is enemy AI, with foes standing their distance as one-dimensional old-skool target practice more than believable enemies responding to your actions.

Switching sides

It makes Haze feel like a more basic, brainless shooter than normally innovative Timesplitters developer Free Radical would have wished – but makes up for it somewhat with decent level design, entertaining vehicle sections, and a curious set of new gameplay features half way through.

That's because half way through Haze, you switch sides to the Promised Hand, who can do sneaky things like play dead, spike weapons with Nectar to OD Mantel forces, and scavenge ammo. It combats Mantel so effectively because of Nectar's sense-censoring properties. Mantel Troopers can't see dead bodies, which dehumanises them to the Promised Hand, who have a more sympathetic plight. It's an interesting plot premise, but ultimately falls short of its initial promise due to poor scripting and cliché characters.

The two on-rails set pieces levels verge on inspired, and gunplay has a fast, gritty feel that's Free Radical's trademark.

Nonetheless there's some explosive, if brainless run-and-gun fun to be had in Haze. The two on-rails set pieces levels verge on inspired, and gunplay has a fast, gritty feel that's Free Radical's trademark. Drop-in/drop-out same-screen two-player co-op is well implemented, and the online four-player variant makes things even more fun – though this will just cut even shorter a game that is only around seven hours short.

The metaphor of a 'mixed bag' suits Haze just fine. Visually it's colourful, bright and looks impressive viewing action from a distance, but up close the textures and especially lighting effects are severely lacking (the fire is just laughable). Online multiplayer too blends interesting maps and inventive modes with an overall lack of balance between the warring factions.

It should have been better really, with talented developers, ideas galore and a genuinely moral storyline, but Haze isn't the triple-A shooter we'd hoped for. It's not the world's worst shooter either, though, and has been a victim of its own hype with the backlash of low review scores. Approach this hoping for the PS3's Halo beater and it won't measure up, but get Haze without expecting the next Goldeneye 007 and you may just enjoy it.

GAME's Verdict
plus points
  • Nectar and Promised Hand abilities are more than just gimmicks, while gunplay is fast and frenetic.
  • Drop-in/drop-out co-op with online play for up to four people makes the campaign more fun.
  • Decent level design, enjoyable singleplayer set-pieces, and the unusual-on-console concept of Quake Wars style story-driven multiplayer maps.
minus points
  • Interesting plot premise that's poorly executed, with some thoroughly dislikeable and cliche characters and cringeworthy dialogue.
  • Poor textures, dopey AI, lacklusture lighting, laughable fire and an overall absence of polish.
  • Painfully short singleplayer campaign.
