Game Reviews

Work experience lad Chris Taylor delivers his view on the beautiful version of the beautiful game.

When the referee blows his whistle for the start of the match, you will be drawn into playing the game and will want to win Pro Evolution Soccer 4.

Pro Evolution Soccer 4 isn't that different from the other Pro Evolution Soccer games apart from the new performance styles and new players on each team in England, and International teams, makes it a better game than the last.

Pro Evolution Soccer 4 has the same idea as the last in that you can play a two player game with a mate or against the computer. The only disadvantage of playing with a mate is that you can't play a season with them, only an exhibition match. If you want to play a season, you have to play against the computer, just like in any other Pro Evolution Soccer game, or another football game.

When you play the computer, you can change the difficulty to which suits you best and how long a half lasts - 5 minutes for a short game and 45 minutes for a long, "real-time" game. When you are actually playing the game, you can change how you perform by substituting players on and off the field and changing formations to match your style of play.

When playing a mate, you can also choose how long you want the match to last and substitute players on and off the field to make your team better, if you need to.

The game, in comparison with FIFA, is actually a lot better, with it being the easiest football game you could play or the most challenging, depending on the difficulty level you decide on. You'll quickly get the hang of playing the game and beat the hardest team there is on the hardest difficulty. The graphics, however, are marginally worse than those of FIFA. The players actually look like their real-life counterparts as well. For example: Ryan Giggs, who plays for Manchester United, actually looks like Ryan Giggs and not just another face, and the same is true with the referee. Unfortunately, the crowd don't look as good. The weather in the matches looks really good; there is a variety of changing weather from rain, sun or fog. The pitches you also play on are very detailed with the very green grass stripes or the brown/green stripes.

Although the game is like other football games, it doesn't have the real names of the teams, much like the other Pro Evolution Soccer games. For example: Portsmouth is Pompey and Manchester United is Man Red, and sometimes it is hard to work out who you are picking or who you are playing against. You'll have to know your football, where as FIFA has the rights to publish the correct names.

When you are playing the game, you can do all the same tricks you are used to doing to get your goals and win your matches. The referee may be a bit strict here and there against your team, like when a free kick isn't really deserved to the computer but, hey, that's football for you.
