Work experience guy James hits one for six...
Finally, another EA cricket game on the PS2. There's been almost two year's wait, but thankfully this game will keep you going for hours on end. I guarantee you won't drop that pad; you'll play and play until you can't feel your fingers and thumbs!
EA's last version of the sport, Cricket 05, is totally different to this year's outstanding, jaw dropping Cricket 07. One of the key reasons this version of Cricket works that much better is the decision to go with an analogue stick batting system. Dubbed the Century Stick, the concept is that it gives you a multiple choice of shot selection by using your century stick to play all kinds of different strokes.
For example, the (Pietersen) "Reverse Sweep" and the good old "Tail-ender" striding up the track and spanking the bowler to the boundary. The other shot selection controls are activated by using the d-pad on the controller; so if you get a bouncer you can press up on the d-pad to play a back foot shot, or down to play a front foot shot, making it all rather versatile.
The bowling in Cricket 07 is equally immense. You can choose from a variety of deliveries like what I like to call the "Confuzzler" – a slower ball to catch the batsmen out on the pace of the delivery – or head over to the "reverse swing" to make your batsmen head back to the pavilion.
Keep your eyes open in the slips as the ball might be just an arms stretch away!
The fielding on Cricket 07 is rather fascinating too. Remember Paul Collingwood's headlong dive against Australia? Well I certainly do! Every fielder has their different fielding techniques and flexibility catches. So keep your eyes open in the slips as the ball might be just an arms stretch away!
Cricket 07 boasts every top notch cricket-playing country in the world, plus English and Australian counties from Hampshire to New south Wales, meaning cricket fans really can't go wrong here. In fact, they'll enjoy everything from an entertaining slog through a long term season with the counties to the trill of the international modes.
Possibly the biggest reason to play though is The Ashes. A new game mode for Cricket 07, it lets you pick your team from scratch; so no more having to field the same old Strauss and Trescothick. There's the famous ‘Best Test Series Ever' 2005 N-Power Ashes on there in particular, so you can have a slog of a time on that.
In all, Cricket 07 is probably the best cricket game out on the PS2. It does have a few problems - such as some inaccurate commentary, and especially some repeated player graphics in everything but the Ashes mode. However, that shouldn't stop cricket fans playing this outstanding game. Just don't blame me if you end up getting square eyes.
GAME's Verdict
- More Variety of shot selection with a greater range of bat types
- The ashes has been thrown on there
- Realistic commentary when it works
- Graphics are still a little bland
- Sound and crowd are basic
- Commentary Repeats when it fails to work
