The story of FINAL FANTASY XII takes place in a world called "Ivalice," in an age when magic was commonplace and airships plied the skies, crowding out the heavens. A world of many races, the humes, bangaa, viera and, of course, moogles, all call Ivalice home.

War was on the horizon. Seeking to strengthen its base of power, Final Fantasy XII's great Archadian Empire had been invading and subjugating its neighboring kingdoms one by one. The small Kingdom of Dalmasca was one such kingdom.

When the occupying Archadian forces established a new consul in Dalmasca's Royal City of Rabanastre, it caught the attention of Vaan, an urchin living on the streets. To Vaan, Final Fantasy XII's Empire was a hated enemy who had taken the life of his brother—his last surviving family member. Vaan hatched a plan to sneak into the castle housing the new consul and unburden him of one or two of his treasures. But before he would have the chance, Vaan got far more than he bargained for; a resistance movement of former Dalmascan soldiers rising up against the Archadian Empire was launching an assault! Amid the ensuing confusion that engulfed the castle, Vaan saw something he could scarcely believe. There, among the members of the resistance, was the figure of the sole remaining heir to the Dalmascan throne, the Princess Ashe, who'd been given up for missing...

Final Fantasy XII's story follows Vaan, Ashe, Vaan's friend Penelo, the sky pirate Balthier, his partner Fran and many more on an adventure through Ivalice that traces the mysteries behind the Archadian Empire's invasion. Since 1987, the FINAL FANTASY series has sold over 60 million units. FINAL FANTASY XII carries on the proud tradition, bringing new ideas to the series and innovation to the RPG genre.

Stunning FFXII visuals: Every aspect of the graphics brings color to the world of Ivalice—blues and oranges reminiscent of the Mediterranean evoke a landscape alive with a mix of European and Arabian imagery.
Take to the skies! Airships feature prominently in FINAL FANTASY XII. They come in all shapes and sizes—the main airship in this story is a medium-sized craft that measures over 1,000 feet from bow to stern. Airships are used for everything from the trading of goods to the waging of war.
An evolved Final Fantasy battle system: Final Fantasy XII presents numerous features never before seen in the FINAL FANTASY series:
- 1. ADB - Final Fantasy XII's Active Dimension Battle is a shift from ATB (Active Time Battle), lending more realism to Final Fantasy XII's battles by allowing seamless switching between the field and the battle scene.
- 2. No load times: Transitions between Final Fantasy XII's field and the battle scene are none-existant, ensuring smoother gaming.
- 3. Real-time Fighting: Besides time elements in Final Fantasy XII, such as the attack timing, the player can fully utilise the field geography in terms of differences in ground level, intricate terrain, places with low visibility and the like.
- 4. Final Fantasy XII Enemies: Monsters in Final Fantasy XII can also take advantage of the varied tactics that ADB offers, possessing sophisticated AI to ambush parties, back up their comrades and restore HP.

Jonny investigates a titanic turnaround for the roleplaying legend.

With nigh-on 70 million units sold in the series so far, the epic Final Fantasy series is about as titanic as games get.

Yet with every instalment, Final Fantasy has become more and more impenetrable, more unfriendly, and more steeped in its own tradition – with bloated, latterday instalments seeing players forcing themselves through the often torturous random battle systems just for the reward of seeing the gorgeous worlds and advancing the, admittedly gripping, storylines.

With Final Fantasy XII the designers have rethought the game from the ground up, keeping all of the things that make a Final Fantasy game great (and which make it a Final Fantasy game at all) and cutting back those gameplay aspects which were keeping it firmly rooted in the late 80s.

The result is an incredible reinvention, and a revitalised adventure that's more than able to go toe to toe with today's most modern games.

The combat is the recipient of the biggest overhaul – now completely in real-time, fights are seamless, spectacular and swift, while a new “Gambit” system allows you to customise the AI of each member of your party by prioritising an almost unlimited combination of condition / reaction instructions, allowing you to sit back and enjoy as your party takes apart increasingly more difficult monsters with stylish ease.

An incredible reinvention - a revitalised adventure that's more than able to go toe to toe with today's most modern games.

What's been achieved technically on the humble PS2 is nothing short of staggering – why does this machine flat-out refuse to die long after its later contemporaries (Xbox and GameCube) have gone to console heaven? There's unlikely to be many titles that look better in 2007, regardless of host machine. You can only stop and marvel at the spectacle of Rabanastre – a bustling, multi-racial city that is so detailed, so alive, that it makes Hyrule Castle Town in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess look like a pre-schooler's bestest ever finger painting.

It's a shame that the emo-styled hero Vaan is straight from the usual Final Fantasy “Androgynous Ladyboy Protagonist Mail Order Catalogue”, but the rest of the cast is brilliantly drawn and developed, from the sneering, opportunistic Balthier to the gallant Princess Ashe and the hundreds of unique non-player characters you'll encounter on the quest.

The adventure, is, of course, huge, wrapped up in an epic, twisty-turny storyline throwing you into a tumultuous series of events which will come to affect every living creature in the massive game world of Ivalice.

Final Fantasy XII is spectacular, epic, powerfully emotive and most importantly, fresh. Here's to the next 70 million.
