SummaryProduct Details

The story of Final Fantasy XII takes place in a world called "Ivalice," in an age when magic was commonplace and airships plied the skies, crowding out the heavens. A world of many races, the humes, bangaa, viera and, of course, moogles, all call Ivalice home.

Game Reviews

Jonny investigates a titanic turnaround for the roleplaying legend.

With nigh-on 70 million units sold in the series so far, the epic Final Fantasy series is about as titanic as games get.

Yet with every instalment, Final Fantasy has become more and more impenetrable, more unfriendly, and more steeped in its own tradition – with bloated, latterday instalments seeing players forcing themselves through the often torturous random battle systems just for the reward of seeing the gorgeous worlds and advancing the, admittedly gripping, storylines.

With Final Fantasy XII the designers have rethought the game from the ground up, keeping all of the things that make a Final Fantasy game great (and which make it a Final Fantasy game at all) and cutting back those gameplay aspects which were keeping it firmly rooted in the late 80s.

The result is an incredible reinvention, and a revitalised adventure that's more than able to go toe to toe with today's most modern games.

The combat is the recipient of the biggest overhaul – now completely in real-time, fights are seamless, spectacular and swift, while a new “Gambit” system allows you to customise the AI of each member of your party by prioritising an almost unlimited combination of condition / reaction instructions, allowing you to sit back and enjoy as your party takes apart increasingly more difficult monsters with stylish ease.

An incredible reinvention - a revitalised adventure that's more than able to go toe to toe with today's most modern games.

What's been achieved technically on the humble PS2 is nothing short of staggering – why does this machine flat-out refuse to die long after its later contemporaries (Xbox and GameCube) have gone to console heaven? There's unlikely to be many titles that look better in 2007, regardless of host machine. You can only stop and marvel at the spectacle of Rabanastre – a bustling, multi-racial city that is so detailed, so alive, that it makes Hyrule Castle Town in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess look like a pre-schooler's bestest ever finger painting.

It's a shame that the emo-styled hero Vaan is straight from the usual Final Fantasy “Androgynous Ladyboy Protagonist Mail Order Catalogue”, but the rest of the cast is brilliantly drawn and developed, from the sneering, opportunistic Balthier to the gallant Princess Ashe and the hundreds of unique non-player characters you'll encounter on the quest.

The adventure, is, of course, huge, wrapped up in an epic, twisty-turny storyline throwing you into a tumultuous series of events which will come to affect every living creature in the massive game world of Ivalice.

Final Fantasy XII is spectacular, epic, powerfully emotive and most importantly, fresh. Here's to the next 70 million.

GAME's Verdict
plus points
  • The new Active Battle system in brilliant.
  • Graphically there's little out there that looks this good.
  • A gripping, epic storyline.
minus points
  • Vaan is hardly the most inspiring protagonist.
  • Battle systems and Quickenings take a little getting used to.
  • The camera controls could have been customisable.

Fina fantasy xii is one of the better recent final fantasy games but since the making of 10 these games have been going downhill final fantasy is my faourite game series of all time i really wish the makers would just go back to the ways of the old style of games with the summoners and the turn based attack systems i have to say i will not be buying any more final fantasy games until they are changed back as it is just not worth it. CHANGE IT BACK!!!!

my favourite game of all time. no ps3 game created so far compares to this. no matter what console u have, if u still own a ps2, buy this, and i promise u will not regret it. To complete the whole game, it takes about 150 hours. for 12 pounds, there is nothing more worth ur time. For ur own good, buy this game. BEST GAME OF ALL TIME. 10/10

Visually, the game is gorgeous, especially during the cutscenes, of which there are a fair amount. The voice acting is also nicely done, on the whole: Balthier's comments in particular are made all the more amusing for their delivery. The battle system is wonderful, giving you a greater ability to pick and choose your fights. If you find yourself overwhelmed, you can almost always retreat until your pursuers leave off the chase - before returning to clobber them after restoring your health. Unlike with randomised battles, you rarely feel as if these break up the flow of the game. The only areas in which this game is slightly lacking are character development and storyline. They are not badly done, by any means, but it is hard to feel particularly engaged by many of the principal characters, which has the effect of making certain scenes less moving than they might otherwise have been. Overall, though, this is an impressive game that is likely to suck up a surprising amount of y

I am a fan of all FF games and for me this is very close to FFVII to which i feel is the best FF game! FFXII from start to finish is amazing from story to the individual character designs to the very addictive monster hunt, i cant stress enough how much i enjoyed this game other than stating for me its up there with FFVII!! Roll on FFXIII for PS3!

The PS2's final Final Fantasy is a stunning affair. Visually striking, aurally impressive, and a complete overhaul of the system on top. The artistic design is simply amazing, although the graphics - when not in the ever-phenomenal FMVs - can look a little oddly textured at times. The voice-acting is by and large excellent - although I'm undecided whether making the evil empire and the bad guys of the game all British is good or bad - and the music, while no longer quite at Nobuo Uematsu's standards, is still great - and the lack of random encounters is a huge change, and many will love it. The story's an intruiging affair, but not told with the usual skill and clarity of the series. The characters, excepting Balthier and Fran, are flat and underdeveloped, and you're aot always entirely sure whose side you're on or why you're doing what you are. Overall, the gameplay's better than in many RPGs, but the story's not as good - especially by FF standards. Still, play it!
