This is, quite frankly, one of the best online FPS's in existence. The map design is near perfect and the number of custom maps is staggering. The person who said that it might only be for hardcore players is wrong, I used to be just a casual gamer, now I love PC games more than any others because of this game.
If you've played CoD4, it's essentially the search and destroy mode, but CS got there first! There's also the hostage mode which involves counter terrorists rescuing hostages from some angry terrorists. The graphics, while nothing stunning nowadays are perfectly adaquate and the HDR in some maps makes it look pretty good :
So, in conclusion, CSS is a truly awesome game which should be played by all, just be warned of the program Valve uses for anti-piracy; Steam, it downloads patches for all the games you have on it and new ones can be bought on there as well and they can take up a huge amount of your download limit if you have one. Don't let it stop you from buying it! BUY!

Its a great Game, but be warned alot of servers have Pro's on so it can be frustrating at times. The mods make up for it though eg. The zombie mod.
for £20 its a steal, buy it.

Reccommended - Counter Strike 1.6 (but source is just as good for those who are new to counter strike)

Counter Strike Source is 3 games in one -
Counter Strike - A good Modern day FPS, each round you start with one life, and you can buy weapons etc. its quite hard, so would recommend this only to hardcore players as it is not newbie friendly.
Day of Defeat - A historical Run n Gun WW2 shooter, with plenty of game modes, maps and servers to keep you entertained, but is also not newbie friendly.
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch - A good shoot em up with simple controls, good weapons, plenty of maps n mods etc. and is newbie friendly, with such things as the gravity gun, being able to throw toliets and filing cabinets at people :D
So all in all, if you dont like one of them, you are bound to like the others, but be warned, there are quite alot of donwloads to patch it up, but once you have done it, it will be well worth it
And for this price, you cant go wrong
