Yorkshire 'is becoming a gaming industry hub'

05.11.2009

Yorkshire is one of the best places to be at the moment for games design, it has been claimed.

Speaking at the annual Eurogamer Expo in Leeds this week, Wakefield-based video games company Team 17 explained that not only does the area have a good reputation for games developers, its studios also boast a diverse range of products and styles.

Assistant producer for Team 17 Karl Gilbert commented: "[Yorkshire] seems to be the place to be at the moment.

"You've got Sumo and Tuna in Sheffield, Just Add Water just outside of Leeds and Revolution which I think is up in York."

One of the major reasons for this range of studios, he added, could be the level of university support that is provided to skilled staff in the industry.

Among the most exciting things to be happening currently in the industry is the impending release of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 title Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which, according Official Xbox Magazine, is "perhaps the decade's most anticipated game".
