Brave new world

The Monster Hunter series has always been synonymous with PlayStation platforms and Japanese audiences, so Capcom's decision to bring the RPG franchise to Wii was a somewhat risky move clearly motivated by a desire to expand its western fanbase.

Learning the trade

Thankfully Monster Hunter Tri delivers new features, gorgeous visuals and an online experience that demonstrate the capabilities of its host platform, meaning the developer's certainly in with a chance of achieving that goal.

The sheer scale and length of Tri's larger fights will have you breaking out in a sweat.

Taking place across varied environments including snowy locales, desert landscapes and new underwater locations, the game depicts a living ecosystem where man has to contend with all manner of beasts. Assuming the role of Moga Island's resident hunter, it's your job to protect the village from the monsters that threaten its wellbeing.

Unlike previous Monster Hunter titles, Tri introduces the game mechanics in easily digestible mouthfuls rather than through complex tutorials. You'll cut your teeth on smaller foes to begin with, getting to grips with the basic principles of hunting and gathering for some time before you're let loose on big creature slaying missions.

Epic battles

Quests generally see you tasked with collecting, catching or killing, and as you progress you'll stockpile items and money, allowing you to modify your weapons and experiment with potion brewing. Along with character customisation options, these give the monster killing a personal touch.

It can take hours of preparation to track down and defeat the game's biggest foes, and the sheer scale and length of Tri's larger fights will have you breaking out in a sweat. With their own unique behaviours the monsters are full of personality, meaning you'll have to learn enemy attack patterns in addition to mastering your own evasion and offensive strategies.

You'll come away feeling like you've gone twelve rounds with some of gaming's most memorable monsters.

Tri is a hands-on RPG in which battles occur in real-time, meaning you won't be pausing to select actions from a menu. Combat can be a bit of a slog at first, but experimentation and perseverance pays off. There's no doubt you'll come away from the experience feeling like you've gone twelve rounds with some of gaming's most memorable monsters. You can use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to play, but we'd suggest opting for the Classic Controller or preferably the Classic Controller Pro as they seem better matched to a game that demands quick reactions and precision timing.

A roaring success

As well as the single player mode, Tri supports two player split screen for select quests, while taking it online enables you and three other hunters to team up. The ability to divide tasks and work together adds a new tactical element to the game, which is at its best when played online with friends - a rarity for a Wii title.

Monster Hunter Tri also does a good job of making a series that's traditionally scary for newcomers as accessible as possible without diluting the franchise's staple gameplay mechanics. Combine this with the fact that it's one of the biggest and best looking Wii titles available and it's nothing short of a Triumph.

GAME's Verdict

  • Breathtaking monster battles.
  • Gorgeous environments.
  • One of the best online games on Wii.
minus points
  • Requires a lot of time to be enjoyed to its full potential.
  • Wii Remote and Nunchuk controls aren't as strong as they should be.
  • We had to wait over eight months for its western release.

Amazing game which is a must buy, this pack itself is great for its money and the game itself is just perfect. The graphics are really good for the wii and it plays very well. If i could recommend one game for the wii it would be this one is a game. This is a game which can easilly out class most of the 360 or ps3 games.

Probably one of the best games on the Wii. The classic controller is a great control to use, you have more accurate control of your moves. The game itself has a steep learning curve, but it's extremely immersive, and will pull you in very easily. The online mode is where the game stands out! It is simply impeccable. The Wii speak is an icon for online mode, especially in the hunting community, as it allows you to discuss strategies over the Wii to help you defeat monsters or complete quests and tasks.t also has a very good userbase, and you are almost guaranteed to find a game to join, and some nice people to go along with it. Another good feature is the weapons section; you can pick from the original array of weapons:short sword and shield, great sword, hammer, lance and large shield and (my personal favourite) the bow gun which come in 3 different sizes. All weapons can be upgraded and modified. Brilliant game. Awsome stuff!

One of the Wii's shining gems. This pack's classic controller really lets you control the game better, and the extra figurines are masterfully made and appealing to look at. The game itself has a steep learning curve, but it's extremely immersive, and will pull you in very easily. The online 4 player co-op mode is brilliant, deepening the game even further. While the wiispeak is often very finicky, with a lot of strings attached, a USB keyboard can be connected for great communication with teammates, although the ingame keyboard is lacking. It also has a very good userbase, and you are almost guaranteed to find a game to join, and some nice people to go along with it.
